Carter, Jackson Meshanic each net 23 as Statesmen top Raptors

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Brothers Carter and Jackson Meshanic shared game-high scoring honors with 23 points apiece, leading the Hobart College basketball team to an 85-64 Liberty League win at Bard College this evening.

Jackson Meshanic was 10-of-15 shooting from the floor and 3-of-4 at the free throw line. He also pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season. Carter Meshanic was even more efficient, shooting 10-of-12 with a 3-pointer and 2-of-4 at the line. Patrick Walker, who threw down a pair of first half dunks, also hit double digits for the Statesmen, finishing with 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting.

As a team, Hobart shot 56.9% from the floor with seven 3-pointers and went 12-of-18 at the line. The Statesmen dominated on the glass, outrebounding the home team 45-23.

Tyler Bruns led the Raptors with 20 points. Greg Farrow added 11 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hobart never trailed in the game and took the lead for good when Carter Meshanic broke a 4-4 tie followed by a 3-pointer by Andrew Lynch.
  • The Statesmen built a double digit lead with a 12-2 run late in the first half. Lynch and Ryan Lucey hit back-to-back 3-pointers during the three-minute scoring surge that gave Hobart a 42-26 advantage.
  • After leading by as many 16 points, the Statesmen went into the break with a 53-38 lead.
  • Bard refused to go down without a fight, using a 15-6 run to open the second half to cut Hobart's lead to just six with about 10 minutes remaining in the game.
  • The Statesmen responded to the threat with 10 straight points to push its lead back into double digits for good. Carter Meshanic keyed the run with a pair of driving layups and a turnaround jumper.

COACH'S CORNER

"Our team was able to find an offensive rhythm in the first half. It was fun watching us share the ball. Defensively, we got stops in the second half that helped us widen our margin. Many guys gave us contributions tonight and that speaks to our unity."
— Head Coach Stefan Thompson '13

FOR THE RECORD
  • Hobart evened its overall record at 7-7 and improved to 3-4 in conference play.
