#1 Statesmen down Pilgrims 3-0

HENNIKER, N.H.—The top-ranked Hobart College hockey team scored three goals in the second period as it defeated New England College 3-0 in a New England Hockey Conference contest at Lee Clement Arena this evening. With the win, the Statesmen are now 14-0-0 overall this season with a 7-0-0 mark in conference play.
 
Five different players scored a point in the victory for Hobart. Mavrick Goyer went the distance in goal for the Statesmen, stopping all 20 shots he faced as he earned his second shutout of the season. Andrew Kormos made 41 saves for the Pilgrims (7-7-0, 4-4-0).
 
KEY STATS:
  • Hobart finished the game with a 44-20 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Statesmen were 1-for-4 on the power play and the Pilgrims were 0-for-6 with the man advantage.
  • Hobart extended its winning streak to 14 games. It is the longest unbeaten streak in program history.
 
SCORING SUMMARY:
  • Zach Tyson opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 5:26 mark of the second period. He one-timed a shot from Matthew Iasenza past Kormos for his sixth goal of the season.
  • One minute later, Ignat Belov notched his sixth goal of the season. He wristed a shot from the left faceoff circle past Kormos. Tanner Hartman was awarded an assist on the goal.
  • Luke Aquaro put the game out of reach with his 10th goal of the season. His unassisted tally gave the Statesmen a three-goal lead at the 7:51 mark of the second period.
 
CLOSE CALLS:
  • Alex LaPlante nearly broke the shutout bid at the 15:25 mark of the second period. He fired a shot off of the left goalpost.
  • In the third period both teams hit goal posts. Manny Cabral bounced a shot off the iron at the 13:25. Thirty seconds later, Matthieu Wuth hit the pipe at the opposite end of the rink.
 
 
COACH'S CORNER:
"I really liked how they guys showed up," Head Coach Mark Taylor said. "It was a hard first period but we sustained it for 60 minutes with the guys embracing a Ray Lewis message about working hard and a loyal alums message on water-tight integrity."
 
UP NEXT:
Hobart will be back in action tomorrow, Jan. 7, when it takes on 10th-ranked Norwich. Faceoff at Kreitzberg Arena is scheduled for 4 p.m.
