Statesmen to host Hawks in final non-conference clash

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College football team will host Hilbert College at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 on Boswell Field at Urick Stadium. It will be the first gridiron meeting between the teams as the Hawks are in their second varsity season.
 
GAME DAY COVERAGE  
PREGAME
  • Hobart will welcome back football alumni who played for the late Jack Daniels, who served as head coach of the Statesmen from 1981 to 1986.
  • Daniels, who passed away in 2021, inherited a program that won just one game in 1980, but led Hobart to four consecutive winning seasons from 1983 to 1986.
  • Daniels returned to the Boswell Field sideline as a special teams assistant coach in 2014 and 2015, helping the Statesmen to a 19-4 record, including a run to the 2014 NCAA quarterfinals.
  • Daniels' wife, Carol, will perform the pregame coin toss.

NATIONAL NUMBERS
  • Hobart (4-1) is ranked in the top 25 in the nation in several statistical categories, including passes intercepted (5th, 11), punt return defense (8th, 0.0 yds/ret), team pass efficiency defense (9th, 83.69), and turnovers gained (10th, 15).
 
ABOUT THE STATESMEN
  • Hobart is coming off a 45-21 home win over Buffalo State last week.
  • The Statesmen defense posted a season-high six takeaways, including interceptions by linebackers Anthony Romano, Matt Brown and Drew Walsh and safety Joe McCoy.
  • Quarterback Johnny Colombi completed 67% of his passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns against the Bengals.
  • He completed passes to seven different receivers, including two to wide receiver Ahmad Crowell, who scored a 51-yard touchdown on a spectacular one-handed catch.
  • Running back Rayshawn Boswell led a balanced rushing attack with 10 carries for 52 yards and a TD.
 
SCOUTING REPORT
  • Although the Hawks are still looking for their first varsity win, Hilbert (0-5) is coming off its highest scoring game of the season, a 34-20 loss at Gallaudet.
  • The Hawks are averaging 188.8 yards per game (79.2 rush, 109.6 pass) and 6.8 points per game.
  • Defensively, Hilbert yields 447.0 yards per game (282.0, 165.0) and 55.0 points per game.
