Game Recap: William Smith Soccer | | Mackenzie Larsen '12

#4 William Smith blanks RPI 3-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—The fourth-ranked William Smith College soccer team defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 3-0 in a Liberty League contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With their third straight shutout, the Herons are now 7-0-3 overall this season with a 3-0-2 mark in conference play.
 
Seneca Blakely-Armitage and Ruth Hotaling led William Smith with a goal and an assist each. Kirsten Nelson started in goal and made four saves in just under 76 minutes of work. Zoe Weeks came on in relief and made one save in 14 minutes of work.
 
Megan Wampner and Sierra Skelding each played 45 minutes in goal for RPI (7-2-3, 2-2-1). Wampner started and made four saves. Skelding stopped three shots in the second half.  
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • William Smith opened the scoring in the fifth minute. Ava Ruppersberger collected a cross from Blakely-Armitage and slipped a shot into the lower right-hand corner of the cage. It was Ruppersberger's third goal of the season.
  • In the 23rd minute, Hotaling gave the Herons a 2-0 lead on a penalty kick. It was her first goal of the season.  
  • Blakely-Armitage added an insurance goal in the 64th minute. She chipped a shot from near the penalty spot past Skelding for her second goal of the season. Hotaling was awarded an assist on the goal.
 
CLOSE CHANCES
  • Veronica Martinez de Pinillos had a golden scoring opportunity in the second minute for the Engineers when she broke down the right side of the field. Her shot from a tight angle was stopped by Nelson.
  • In the sixth minute, Hotaling fired a shot off the crossbar.
  • In the 25th minute Izzy O'Clair had an attempt smothered by Nelson
  • Wampner made a diving shot on a Maggie Speckhart late in the first half.
  • Julia DiMenna had a pair of shots early in the second half that were stopped by Skelding.
 
KEY STATS
  • William Smith ended the game with a 17-7 advantage in shots and had all four of the game's corner kicks.
  • It was the Herons' 11th straight victory over RPI.
 
SENIOR SENDOFF
Following today's game, William Smith recognized its seven seniors, Ava Ruppersberger, Kirsten Nelson, Emily Johnson, Emma Kirts, Ava Brazie, Maggie Speckhart and Taylor Ashe, and five fifth-year players, Emma Faso, Julia DiMenna, Seneca Blakely-Armitage, Julia Berg and Katrine Berg, were recognized for their contributions to the William Smith soccer program.

UP NEXT
William Smith will be back on Cozzens Field tomorrow, Oct. 14, when it welcomes Union College for a key Liberty League contest. The match with the Garnet Chargers is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
