SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team fell 2-1 in double overtime at Union College this afternoon in a Liberty League matchup. The Herons fall to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in the conference, while the Garnet Chargers move to 7-6 overall with a 3-2 mark in the Liberty League.

Kate Barilla scored her second goal of the season on the Herons lone goal of the contest. Barilla now sits at seven points on two goals and three assists this season.
William Smith outshot Union 14-13 and held an 11-9 edge in shots on goal through 78 minutes. Despite being outshot, the Garnet Chargers recorded seven penalty corners compared to the Herons' two in the crucial conference clash.
MATCH MOMENTS
- The majority of play in the first half was in the midfield, with both teams trading the momentum. William Smith held a 4-1 edge in shots in the opening 30 minutes but couldn't break the deadlock early on.
- It took the Herons just 2:24 into the second half to open the scoring after William Smith was awarded a penalty corner. Senior Libby Maxwell sent the ball to a waiting Barilla who fired off a shot past the Garnet Charger goalie.
- With under two minutes remaining in the contest the Herons were awarded a penalty stroke opportunity to seal the win. Junior Hannah Huston's attempt was saved by Marion Stuntz to keep the lead at just one.
- Stuntz save sparked an offensive burst for Union in efforts to tie the game. With 39 seconds remaining in regulation, Molly Halliday delivered for the Garnet Chargers, firing off a shot past senior Kristen McCormick. Sophie Ruhl was credited with the assist to send the game to overtime.
- Union continued its momentum into the overtime periods, firing off 10 of its 13 shots in the extra periods. On the Garnet Chargers 13th shot of the contest, Megan Dorsey recorded the game-winning-goal, firing a shot past McCormick for the win.
- McCormick played all 78 minutes of the game in goal for the Herons and recorded a season-high six saves. She is now 6-4 on the season.

William Smith will be back in action Friday, Oct. 20, when it heads to Saratoga Springs, New York, to take on Skidmore College. The conference matchup between the Herons and the Thoroughbreds is set for 3:39 p.m. at Wagner Park.
