HWS wins David Lee Arnoff Trophy

The Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailing team won the David Lee Arnoff Trophy on Seneca Lake this past weekend. It is the seventh time in the 10-year history of the regatta that the trophy will remain in Bozzuto Boathouse. 

The Colleges also competed in the Nevins Trophy in Kings Point, New York, finishing 15th. William Smith sailors traveled to Providence, Rhode Island, to compete in the Women's Atlantic Coast Tournament, placing eighth. 

DAVID LEE ARNOFF TROPHY
  • With only nine teams competeing the regatta was sailed in a combined A and B Division. Twelve races were contested in each division. 
  • The HWS sailing team defended its home turf, finishing the weekend with 78 points. Pennsylvania was second 56 points behind. 
  • In the combined Divisions, the Colleges finished first and second overall. 
  • HWS's A Division boat controlled the regatta, finishing with 27 points. The boat was skippered by Senior Will Murray, with first-year's Ella Donaldson and Stella Kim and junior Colin DuBose competing as crew. They only finished outside the top three once, with seven first place finishes and three second place finishes.
  • The B-Division boat compiled 51 points on the weekend. The boat was skippered by senior Nick Sessions with Valyn Mogensen and Laura Therien sailing as crew. Their boat had nine top four finished and won the third race.
  • The Colleges crossed the line first eight times.

WOMEN'S ATLANTIC COAST TOURNAMENT
  • In Providence, William Smith  compiled 244 points over 14 races to finish eighth overall.
  • On Saturday, the teams arrived to shifty conditions with winds out of the North. Sunday's racing was contested in 10-16 knot winds which allowed for excellent sailing. 
  • William Smith finished sixth in A Division boat finished sixth, tallying 112 points. Junior Elizabeth Starck and senior Anna McBride battled back from a slow start to finish with five top four finishes in their final six races, including a win in the 10th race. 
  • The Herons placed 12th in the B-Division, finishing with 132 points. Junior Brook Wood and First-year Maya Mahoney competed in the division. They crossed the line in the top 10 eight times.

NEVINS TROPHY
  • HWS was 15th at the Nevins Trophy, compiling 222 points over 10 races in A and B Division. 
  • Only two races were sailed on Saturday in a shifty breeze out of the Northeast.  The final eight races were contested on Sunday in a 18-22 knot breeze. 
  • HWS was ninth in B Division, collecting 98 points on the weekend. Jeffrey Klempen competed as skipper with Frances Depke and Elijah Goldman sailing as crew. They were in the top 10 in five races, including two third places.
  • Juan Carlos Lacerda Jones, Rachel Duggan and F. Stephen Martocci competed in A Division, finishing 16th. They had 124 points on the weekend.

The Colleges will be back in the water this weekend, Oct. 21-22, in Annapolis, Maryland for the Open Atlantic Coast Tournament.
