Herons head north for crucial conference clash

The fourth-ranked William Smith College soccer team heads to the North Country tomorrow, Oct. 28, to face St. Lawrence University in the last regular season matchup of the year. The crucial Liberty League contest is set for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
 
The Herons enter the final day of the regular season with a 10-0-4 overall record, and a 5-0-3 mark in Liberty League play. This past weekend, William Smith defeated Bard 3-0. Seneca Blakely-Armitage scored twice in the win. The Herons' defensive line held Bard without a shot. William Smith tied Vassar the following afternoon in a scoreless match. The Herons outshot the Brewers 15-3. Kirsten Nelson had one save.
 
The Saints are 7-5-4 with a 3-3-2 mark in conference play. On Tuesday, St. Lawrence fell to Clarkson 2-0. Goalkeeper Kelly Snode made eight saves.

PLAYOFF PICTURE
  • William Smith cannot fall out of the top three in the league standings.
  • The Herons can lock up at least a share of their 16th consecutive regular season title with a win.
  • The Saints are currently in fifth and can finish anywhere from fourth to out of the playoffs depending on Saturday's results.
  • Rochester Institute of Technology also enters the weekend with 18 points and takes on Vassar.
  • Ithaca is third with 17 points and faces RPI.
  • The Brewers and Engineers are fighting for their playoff lives sitting in sixth and seventh, respectively.
 
ABOUT THE HERONS
  • Julia DiMenna and Seneca Blakely-Armitage lead the Herons with five goals each. 
  • Blakely-Armitage adds two assists to lead the team with 12 points.
  • Playmaker Katrine Berg has five assists and seven points.
  • Nelson has played the majority of the minutes in goal for the Herons. She has a 0.52 GAA, .873 save percentage and six shutouts.
 
ABOUT THE SAINTS
  • Zoe Rogan leads St. Lawrence with four goals and nine points.
  • Three Saints are tied, with two assists apiece.
  • Snode has played the majority of the time in goal for the Saints. Snode has a GAA of 0.75 and a .863 save percentage.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Saturday will be the 51st meeting between the Herons and the Saints.
  • William Smith leads the all-time series 38-8-4, including a mark of 16-5-2 in Canton.
  • In last year's meeting, the Herons and the Saints finished in a scoreless draw. William Smith outshot St. Lawrence 37-2. Amanda Kesler made two saves in the shutout.
