Lakers slip past Herons with late goal

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College hockey team and Oswego State appeared headed to overtime until the Lakers slipped home what proved to be the game-winning goal with just 52.1 seconds remaining. Tessa Mucha scored the decisive goal to lift the visitors to victory.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • William Smith struck first when Annabel Ziskin dug the puck out of the left corner and slipped it to Elizabeth MacMurray, who threw it out in front from below the goal line. The puck took a Heron bounce off goalie Lexi Levy's skate, giving the home team the first goal of the season 18:51 into the first period.
  • In the second period, Ashlyn McGrath equalized for Oswego, burying a shot from right out in front at 3:26. Rachel Corbett and Tilly Pethrick earned assists on the goal.
  • With just 52.1 seconds remaining, Mack Hull sent a pass from the left corner to Tessa Mucha at the back post, who sent it into the net for the game winner.
 
POWER OUTAGE
  • With the game tied, Oswego got three power plays in the second period, but the Herons killed off all three.
  • William Smith had just one power play and the Lakers were able to kill it.
 
BETWEEN THE PIPES
  • Heron junior goalie Erin Murray enjoyed a strong outing, making 36 saves.
  • Levy earned the win at the other end of the ice with 25 stops.

  • William Smith and Oswego will compete their weekend home-and-home series Saturday, Oct. 28. The opening faceoff is set for 3 p.m. in Oswego's Stanley Arena.
