CANTON, N.Y.—The fourth-ranked William Smith College soccer team scored three goals in each half as they cruised to a 6-0 victory over St. Lawrence in a Liberty League contest on Sandy MacAllaster Field this afternoon.
Ava Ruppersberger led the way for the Herons, recording two goals and two assists in the victory.
With the win, the Herons extend their unbeaten streak to 15 games, improving to 11-0-4 overall on the season. William Smith went 6-0-3 in Liberty League play, claiming its 16th consecutive regular season title.
Ruth Hotaling also had a brace in the victory for the Herons.
Katrine Berg tacked on a pair of assists.
Kirsten Nelson played just under 74 minutes in goal, making five saves.
Zoe Weeks finished the game and did not face a shot. It was the Herons' eighth consecutive shutout.
St. Lawrence (7-6-4, 3-4-2) earned the sixth seed, finishing the regular season with 11 points in Liberty League play. Kelly Snode made six saves in just under 76 minutes in goal for St. Lawrence. Darcie McDonough made 2 saves in the final 14 minutes.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Hotaling opened the scoring in the 18th minute. She cleaned up a bouncing ball inside the six-yard box, chipping a shot past Snode for her third goal of the year. Ruppersberger and Berg were awarded assists on the goal.
- Ten minutes later, Hotaling pocketed her fourth goal of the season, firing a left-footed shot from the top of the 18-yard box into the upper right corner of the cage.
- Moira van der Putt gave William Smith a three-goal lead with 14 minutes left in the opening frame. She collected a pass from Ruppersberger and buried a shot in the back of the net. It was her second goal of the season.
- In the 56th minute, Marjorie Plants headed home a corner kick from Katrine Berg for her second goal of the season.
- Ruppersberger converted a penalty kick attempt in the 61st minute to make it 5-0.
- Nine minutes later, Ruppersberger added her sixth goal of the year, chipping a shot from the top of the 18-yard box over a leaping Snode.
