Statesmen edged by Spartans 3-2

CORTLAND, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team was edged by Case Western Reserve University, which was receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, 3-2 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship on Holloway Field on the Campus of SUNY Cortland this afternoon.
 
Chris Friedlander led Hobart with a goal and an assist. Guillermo Castañeda Chang played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves.
 
Three different players scored for the Spartans, who advance to take on Cortland tomorrow afternoon. Bradley Winter played all 90 minutes in goal for Case Western and made four saves.
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • Hobart concludes their season with a 12-6-2 overall record.
  • The Spartans are now 10-3-3 on the season.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • An evenly played game, Hobart finished the contest with a 14-13 edge in shots. Both teams had six shots on goal.
  • The Statesmen also had a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Case Western opened the scoring in the 30th minute. Kysen Kroeger kicked home a loose ball in front of the goal for his third tally of the season. Alex Lippiatt was awarded an assist on the goal.
  • The Statesmen answered in the 34th minute. Quinn Phillips blasted a shot from 25 yards out past Winter for his fifth goal of the season. Friedlander was awarded an assist on the goal. It was Phillips' fifth goal of the season.
  • Lukas Dalakis gave Case Western a 2-1 lead headed into half time when he scored his second goal of the season. McLaren Baggett and Matt Vante had helpers on the goal.
  • Jad Oglesby put the game out of reach in the 63rd minute. He fired a shot just under the crossbar for his first goal of the season. Brandon Kim was awarded an assist on the goal.
  • Friedlander brought Hobart within a goal 60 seconds later but that was as close as Hobart would get. He forced a turnover and tucked a shot under the crossbar for his fifth goal of the season.
