Late surge powers Hobart past Brockport

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team improved to 3-0 on the young season with an 85-72 victory over SUNY Brockport in Bristol Gym tonight. The Statesmen broke the game's 13th tie with a decisive 17-4 run and put the game away at the free throw line.
 
Juniors Pat Healy, Carter Meshanic and Aidan Rodgers led Hobart. Healy scored a game-high 21 points, including an 11-of-12 effort at the free throw line, and grabbed seven rebounds. Meshanic produced his second collegiate double-double, finishing with 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Rodgers also had 17 points and a team-high six assists.
 
Brockport had four players hit double digits led by Mekhi Beckett's 19 points. Tony Arnold chipped in 13 points and a team-high six assists. Colby Jordan and Zachary Rice chipped in 12 points and 11 points, respectively.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • During the first 30 minutes of the contest, fans were treated to a back-and-forth, fast-paced game that featured 13 ties and 12 lead changes.
  • Hobart enjoyed a 14-8 lead for the largest lead of the first half and led 30-28 at the break. Meshanic almost had a double-double in the first 20 minutes, taking eight points and nine boards into the locker room.
  • After Brockport's Mekhi Beckett tied the game at 54, Meshanic converted a layup to kickoff a 17-4 Hobart run. The surge featured a balanced attack with Isaiah Washington, Aidan Rodgers and Pat Healy each contributing four points.
  • A 9-2 run by the Golden Eagles pulled the visitors within six with just under two minutes to go.
  • Hobart closed out the victory going 10-of-12 at the free throw line over the final minute and a half.
 
KEY STATS
  • The Statesmen torched the net in the second half, shooting 63% from the floor.
  • Hobart had a decisive advantage at the free throw line. For the third time in as many games, the Statesmen made more free throws (28) than their opponent attempted (20).
  • Hobart also controlled the glass, outrebounding Brockport 43-31.
