No. 2 Herons host No. 3 Yellowjackets in Liberty League semifinals

William Smith College is set to host the University of Rochester in the 2023 Liberty League Field Hockey Tournament semifinal round Friday, Nov. 4, at 4 p.m. on McCooey Field. The winner will advance to play the winner of the other semifinal game (Vassar at Ithaca) for the championship and automatic bid to the 2023 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship.  
 
Fans who can't make it to McCooey Field can follow the action with HWS All-Access Video and Live Stats. The game will be broadcast on WHWS-FM (105.7 in Geneva).
 
ABOUT THE HERONS: 
  • William Smith enters the postseason with an 11-7 overall record and finished conference play with a 5-2 record clinching the second seed in the Liberty League Tournament.
  • The Herons are coming off a 4-0 win over SUNY Oswego on Saturday for their sixth shutout of the season. Graduate student Mackenzie Wodka and senior Libby Maxwell were named to the weekly honor roll after strong performances in the regular season finale.
  • Junior Rebecca Mantione leads William Smith with 23 points on 10 goals and three assists. She ranks fifth in the conference in goals, and sixth in points.
  • Maxwell is second on the team with 17 points on five goals and seven assists. She is third in the conference in assists.
  • William Smith has allowed only 24 goals this season, keeping its opponents to 1.28 goals per game.
  • Senior Kristen McCormick has started 12 games in goal, recording a 1.33 GAA and a .682 save percentage.
  • Graduate student Kate Barilla and senior Lauren Jackson have combined for 11 of the teams 13 defensive saves this season. Jackson tied the career record for defensive saves (16) earlier this season, which has been in place since 2008.

ABOUT THE YELLOWJACKETS: 
  • Rochester enters the postseason with a 14-6 overall record and was 5-2 in the Liberty League, clinching the third seed in the tournament. The Yellowjackets are riding a four-game win streak after defeating Geneseo 3-0 on Saturday.
  • Maeve Fogarty leads the team with 33 points on 13 goals and seven assists. She is followed by Zoe Conomikes with 21 points on seven goals and seven assists.
  • Kara Houston has played a majority of minutes in goal for Rochester and has compiled a 0.68 GAA and an .856 save percentage.
  • Elisabeth Sidorski leads the Yellowjackets with three defensive saves.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES: 
  • Friday's matchup will be the 61st meeting between the Herons and the Yellowjackets.
  • William Smith holds a 44-15-1 edge over Rochester in the series including a 25-6 advantage in Geneva.
  • Earlier this season, the Herons defeated the Yellowjackets on McCooey Field. The two teams were tied 1-1 after 80 minutes of play. William Smith finished on top 3-2 in the shootout to grab a 2-1 conference win at home.
  • Last season, William Smith defeated Rochester in the Liberty League Championship game. The Herons topped the Yellowjackets 1-0 after a penalty shootout to grab their first conference title since 2015.
