William Smith soars past NEC 6-1

HENNIKER, N.H.—Six different players scored a goal as the William Smith College ice hockey team defeated New England College 6-1 in a New England Hockey Conference contest at Lee Clement Arena this afternoon. With the win, William Smith is now 2-2-0 overall this season with a 2-0-0 mark in conference play.
 
Annabel Ziskin had a game-high three points on a goal and two assists. Erin Murray made 16 saves in 60 minutes in goal for the Herons.
 
Jordan Pond scored for the Pilgrims (0-4-0, 0-2-0). Hannah Podvey made 41 saves in goal for NEC.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Mackenzie O'Neil opened the scoring at the 18:21 mark of the first period. She wristed a shot from the right faceoff circle past Podvey for her first goal of the season. It was a shorthanded goal.
  • The Pilgrims tied the game thirty seconds later. Pond snapped a shot from the right faceoff circle past Murray. Cassie Kelly was awarded an assist on the goal.
  • Lauren Legler scored the game-winning goal just over two minutes into the middle frame. She one-timed a centering pass from Ziskin past the NEC goalie. It was Legler's first goal of the season.
  • At the 4:42 mark of the second period, Kayla Ketchabaw gave the Herons a two-goal lead with her team-leading fourth goal of the season. While sliding on her knees, she slipped a shot past Podvey. The goal was assisted by O'Neil and Ava Cornforth.
  • At the 6:36 mark of the third period, Ziskin notched a goal of her own, firing home a shot from the point. Her tally was assisted by Brianna Felice.
  • Allie Cimis extended William Smith's lead two minutes later. She collected a pass from Ziskin and slipped a shot over the goal line. 
  • Ava Cornforth rounded out the scoring with two minutes left. Her first goal of the season was assisted by Kelly Howe and Seneca Urban.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • William Smith finished the game with a 47-17 edge in shots on goal.
  • Neither team scored on the power play. William Smith was 0-for-3 and New England College was 0-for-4 with the extra attacker.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith begins a three-game homestand next weekend, Nov 10-11, with a pair of NEHC games. The Herons will host Southern Maine on Friday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. They will take on Salem State on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 4 p.m.
