Herons fall in conference opener at Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.— The William Smith College basketball team opened conference play this evening, falling to Union College, 49-33. The Herons fall to 0-6 on the season while the Garnet Chargers move to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the Liberty League.

Senior Brooke Jarvis led William Smith with 19 points and 14 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Junior Maddie Patrick chipped in four points and eight rebounds in the loss.

HERON STAT LEADERS HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Herons and the Garnet Chargers traded early points as Jarvis dropped nine early points to keep William Smith within three heading into the second quarter.
  • Jarvis continued to shine in the second quarter, scoring all five of the Herons points in the second.
  • William Smith struggled to find any offensive momentum in the first half but held strong defensively, keeping the Herons within eight heading into the second half.
  • Union opened the second half on a 9-4 run to extend its lead to 13 before William Smith sparked a comeback after graduate student Kerstin Kelly, first-year Miranda Martin and Patrick would lead the Herons on a 6-2 run to end the third.
  • The Herons' offensive push continued into the fourth as first-year's Ava Lobozzo, Giana Lobozzo and Jazzmyn Lewis entered the game to apply a full court press on the Garnet Chargers. The energy sparked a 7-1 run as both Lobozzo sisters converted opportunities to bring William Smith within four, forcing a Union timeout.
  • The Garnet Chargers came out of the timeout strong, going on a 14-0 run to regain the momentum of the game and close out the contest on top, 49-33.

William Smith will be back in action tomorrow, Dec. 2, when it concludes its conference road trip with a Liberty League showdown with Vassar. Action between the Herons and the Brewers is set for 2 p.m. in the Athletics and Fitness Center on the campus of Vassar College.
