Statesmen to face Bantams in Top-15 showdown

The top-ranked Hobart College hockey team hits the road this Saturday, Dec. 9, as they travel to Hartford, Connecticut, to take on 14th-ranked Trinity College. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. in the non-conference clash.
 
This will be Hobart's third matchup against a team ranked in the USCHO.com poll this season and is the Bantam's first.
 
The Statesmen enter the game with an overall record of 9-2-0. This past weekend, Hobart defeated UMass Boston and Johnson & Wales University to improve to 5-1-0 in New England Hockey Conference play. Friday, Hobart defeated the Beacons 6-1. Tanner Hartman (1g, 5a) led the way for the Statesmen, factoring into all six goals.  The next day, Hobart shut out Johnson & Wales 8-0. Hartman netted four goals and added an assist on his way to earning NEHC Player of the Week honors. Mavrick Goyer stopped all 26 shots he faced as he earned his third shutout of the season.
 
The Bantams stand at 7-1-0, 4-0-0 in NESCAC play. Trinity is coming off a 1-0 win over Albertus Magnus on Tuesday. Christian Hayes scored a shorthanded goal at the 9:47 mark of the first period and Devon Bobak stopped all 17 shots he faced as he earned the shutout.

ABOUT THE STATESMEN
  • Hartman leads the Statesmen with 10 goals, 10 assists and 20 points after he logged 11 points this past weekend. His offensive fireworks broke the Hobart single-game records for goals (4) against the Wildcats, assists (5) and points (6) against the Beacons.
  • Ignat Belov is second on the team with eight assists and 14 points. Chris Duclair is second on the team with nine goals.
  • Damon Beaver has played the majority of the minutes in net for the Statesmen. He has a GAA of 0.67 and a save percentage of .970 with four shutouts. Goyer is 3-1-0 with a 0.76 GAA, a .956 save percentage and three shutouts.
 
NATIONAL NUMBERS
  • Behind the duo of Beaver and Goyer, Hobart is ranked first in the nation in scoring defense (0.73). The Statesmen have allowed just eight goals in 11 games.
  • Hobart is also first in the nation in penalty killing percentage (1.00) and scoring margin (+4.91).
  • The Statesmen are second in scoring offense (4.91) and power-play percentage (.366).
 
 
ABOUT THE BANTAMS
  • Gerard Maretta leads Trinity with five goals and seven points.
  • Kyle Tomaso and Devan Tongue have a team-high five assists each.
  • Bobak has played the majority of time in goal for the Bantams. Bobak has a GAA of 1.19 and a save percentage of .935. Bobak has one shutout this season. He is fifth in the nation in GAA. His two shutouts are third in the nation behind Beaver and Goyer.
 
NATIONAL NUMBERS
  • Trinity is second in the nation in scoring defense (1.25).
  • The Bantams are fifth in scoring margin (2.50), 16th in scoring offense (3.75) and 25th in penalty killing percentage.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Saturday will be the 13th meeting between Hobart and the Trinity. 
  • The Statesmen lead the overall series 5-4-3, with Trinity holding a 3-1-2 edge in Hartford. 
  • In the last meeting, the Statesmen defeated the Bantams 2-1 in overtime. Jonah Alexander scored the game-winning goal, batting a Luke Aquaro pass out of midair. Damon Beaver made 26 saves in the win.
