DeVaney posts 11th double-double in conference clash against Union

GENEVA, N.Y.— The William Smith College basketball team fell to Union 69-51 in a Liberty League matchup in Bristol Gymnasium this evening. The Herons fall to 6-16 overall and 4-11 in conference play, while the Dutchwomen move to 8-13 overall with a 6-9 mark in conference play.  
 
Senior Lauren DeVaney led the Herons with 14 points and 15 rebounds as she posted her team-leading 11th double-double of the season. Sophomore Molly Walsh posted 11 points while senior Kerstin Kelly chipped in a season-high 10 points and two rebounds.

HERON STAT LEADERS
FIRST HALF
  • Union went on a 4-0 run to start the game before Kelly nailed a deep three to cut the Dutchwomen lead to one.
  • William Smith and Union would trade early points before the Dutchwomen extended their lead to six. Sophomore Molly Walsh would hit a three-pointer to keep the Herons in the game.
  • Kelly opened up the second quarter hitting two more three-pointers to spark the Heron offense.
  • Union showed strong ball movement in the second quarter as the Dutchwomen went on 14-4 run to end the half up by 15.
 
SECOND HALF
  • The Dutchwomen went on a 6-0 run to start the second half which was followed by a 6-0 run by the Herons looking for a quick response.
  • Walsh hit two more three-pointers early in the third quarter to keep the Herons hopes alive.
  • Union continued to push the momentum on offense to maintain a 14-point lead heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
  • Juniors Fiona Horan and Jarvis combined for four early points in the final quarter to cut into the Dutchwomen's lead.
  • DeVaney posted six points down the stretch as William Smith tried to gain the late momentum.
  • Union's lead proved to be too much for the Herons to climb out of, handing William Smith the conference loss.

William Smith will be back in action tomorrow as it welcomes Bard to Bristol Gymnasium for a Liberty League matchup. Tipoff between the Herons and the Raptors is set for 2 p.m. with a brief celebration of William Smith's seniors Lauren DeVaney and Kerstin Kelly beforehand.
