#21 Hobart splits matches on Day 1 of Liberty League Tournament

CANTON, N.Y.—The Hobart College squash team, which is ranked 21st in the College Squash Team Rankings, split two matches in its first day of competition at the 2023 Liberty League Men's Squash Championship at St. Lawrence University.
 
The Statesmen beat Bard 9-0 to open the tournament before dropping a hard-fought match to No. 22 St. Lawrence 5-4. Hobart finished second in Group B. The Saints won the group after beating Bard 8-1 earlier in the day.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
  • Against the Raptors, Hobart did not lose a game. The Statesmen added two more 3-0 sweeps against St. Lawrence.
  • Sayf Elhawary and Roberto Vega were 2-0 on the day.
 
AGAINST THE RAPTORS
  • Junior Omar Kiwan collected his team-leading 12th win of the season, dispatching Artemy Mukhin, 11-4, 11-4, 13-11, at No. 1. It was Kiwan's third win of the year in the top spot.
  • Junior Sebi De La Vega swept Martin Graham, 11-4, 11-3, 11-4 at No. 2.
  • Junior Hussein Labib dropped four points, beating Asa Kaplan, 11-2, 11-1, 11-1. It was Labib's ninth win of the year.
  • First-year Javier De La Vega defeated Jacob Nathan, 11-1, 11-2, 11-3 at No. 4. De La Vega has eight wins this year.
  • Vega swept Ali Mounim Rajabi, 11-1, 11-1, 11-2 in the fifth spot.
  • Elhawary won 11-1, 11-2, 11-1 at No. 6.
  • James Mazzarelli defeated Mujitaba Naqib, 11-1, 11-4, 11-2. It was Mazzarelli's ninth win of the year.
 
AGAINST THE SAINTS
  • In the evening session, Elhawary picked up his ninth win of the year, sweeping Patrick Walford at No. 7. Elhawary won 13-11, 11-7, 11-7.
  • Vega also notched his ninth win of the season against St. Lawrence. He beat Harry Robson, 8-11, 14-12, 11-5, 12-10. Vega is 9-9 this year.
  • Senior Giacomo Dalle Molle swept Harrison Callaway, 11-5, 11-9, 11-9, at No. 9. Dalle Molle has seven wins this season.
  • At No. 4, Joseph Raskin Lantos had one of the closer matches of the day. He rallied to beat Alexander Scott, 11-7, 9-11, 6-11, 11-7, 12-10. Raskin Lantos has nine wins this year.
  • Javier de La Vega dropped a tightly contested contest at No. 5, 10-12, 11-7, 8-11, 11-6, 11-7. 
  • St. Lawrence added two 3-1 victories and two 3-0 sweeps.
 
 
UP NEXT
Hobart will be back in action tomorrow, Feb. 5, when it takes on Denison in the third-place game. The Big Red finished second in Group A with a 1-1 record. The match is scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m.
