Gallagher goes deep in Florida finale

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.—Junior Ty Gallagher hit the Hobart baseball team's first home run of the season in the team's final game in Florida this afternoon. He went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored against UW-Eau Claire.

The BluGolds (5-4) scored at least once in all seven innings to secure a 23-11 win over the Statesmen (2-6).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UWEC jumped out to a 4-0 lead after half an inning. Hobart got one back in the bottom of the inning when Gallagher's sac fly plated graduate student Michael Whiteherse.
  • The BluGolds broke the game open with five more runs in the top of the second and two in the third, extending their lead to 11-1.
  • Gallagher sparked a three-run third with a two-run homer and first-year Christian Petry added an RBI single.
  • UWEC put the game out of reach with two more runs in the fourth and three in the fifth.

BEHIND THE NUMBERS
  • The Statesmen pounded out a season-high 13 hits.
  • In addition to Gallagher's big game, first-year Nate Garrett, first-year Evan Munuz, first-year Isaiah Pinto and Petry also collected two hits.
  • Whiteherse was 1-for-3 with three runs scored and two stolen bases.

FLORIDA RECAP
  • On Saturday, Hobart won its opener in the Sunshine State 4-2 over Williams. Pinto drove in two runs to open the scoring and the Statesmen never trailed. First-year Alex Marancik got the win on the mound, limiting the Ephs to five hits over seven innings.
  • The Ephs took the second game of the doubleheader 17-1.
  • On Monday, the Statesmen grabbed an early 2-0 lead, but Elmhurst answered with eight unanswered runs. Hobart pushed across three runs in the top of the seventh, but their rally came up short, falling to the Blue Jays 8-5. Gallagher, Pinto and Petry each produced two hits for the Statesmen.
  • In game two, Hobart again seized the lead, scoring three in the first inning, but again, Elmhurst fought back with eight straight, holding on for another 8-5 win. Gallagher accounted for half of the Statesmen's six hits in the game.

ON THE HORIZON
  • Hobart is slated to make its Liberty League debut this weekend with a three-game series at home against Clarkson.
