Pacers rally past Statesmen in season opener

Whiteherse notches 2 hits, 2 steals; Marancik posts quality start in debut

CARY, N.C.—The Hobart College baseball team scored four runs in the top of the first inning, but William Peace University rallied late to score a 9-5 win over the Statesmen in their season opener.

Graduate student Michael Whiteherse led off the game with a double on what proved to be a two-hit night. He also posted a pair of stole bases in his first game for Hobart. On the hill, first-year right-hander Alex Marancik gave the Statesmen a quality start, pitching six innings, scattering nine hits and allowing only one unearned run.

Brett Kemp went 4-for-4 to lead the Pacers while Cameron Butler went 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Whiteherse's leadoff double, junior Alex Morse singled to left and junior Ty Gallagher drew a walk to load the bases. First-year Isaiah Pinto earned Hobart's first RBI of the season with another walk.
  • First-year Jackson Fowle singled to right to drive in another run.
  • With one out, first-year Jeremy Sanchez reached on a fielder's choice and Gallagher scored to make it 3-0.
  • First-year Christian Petry made it a 4-0 game, with a single that sent Fowle home from second.
  • WPU got on the board in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of a Hobart error.
  • The Pacers took the lead with a five-run seventh, including a three-run double by Butler.
  • William Peace tacked on four more runs in the eighth to build a comfortable 9-4 lead.
  • Peyton Howard retired the Statesmen in order in the top of the ninth to close out the win.
