Statesmen strike out 14, tame Wolves 8-4

GENEVA, N.Y.—Four Hobart College pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts and the Statesmen rallied from a three-run deficit to defeat Keuka College 8-4 at McDonough Park tonight. Hobart won for the fourth time in its past five games to improve to 8-15 overall, while the Wolves fall to 5-17 on the year.

"Tonight was a good team effort, our first time this year coming from behind," said Hobart Head Coach Brad Cook. "We did a great job responding to adversity. It's nice to find a way to win a close game."

GROUP EFFORT ON THE HILL
  • First-year Aaron Forgues was the opener for the Statesmen, pitching a scoreless first inning with a strikeout.
  • First-year Johnny Hill was credited with the win after pitching three innings and allowing three runs, with four strikeouts.
  • First-year Teck Nash came on to pitch the fifth, sixth and seventh, allowing one run with four more strikeouts.
  • First-year Max Friedlander earned the six-out save, striking out a game-high five.

KC STRIKES FIRST
  • Keuka manufactured the first run of the game. Tyler Lewandowski led off the third with a double down the leftfield line.
  • Shane Daley's sacrifice bunt moved Lewandowski over to third and Josh Tryon's sacrifice fly to center brought him home.
  • The Wolves made it 3-0 on Samuel O'Neil's triple to the leftfield wall in the top of the fourth.

COMEBACK
  • Hobart scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead.
  • Junior Ty Gallagher reached on an error to lead off the inning followed by a walk by first-year Will Jones.
  • Christian Petry laid down a perfect bunt single, but pitcher Spencer Brown's late throw to first was offline and skipped away from the first baseman allowing Gallagher to score.
  • Isaiah Pinto reached on a fielder's choice that brought Jones home to make it a 3-2 game.
  • A walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for junior Joe McCoy, who delivered a two-run single down the left field line.
  • With runners on first and second, graduate student Michael Whiteherse grounded out to second. Junior Alex Morse rounded third and when first baseman Derek Novicki threw behind him to third, he darted home for a 5-3 lead.

CLOSING IT OUT
  • Nash was efficient on the mound in his first three innings, but ran into trouble when he went back out for the eighth.
  • With no one out and runners on the corners, Cook handed the ball to Friedlander. He struck out the first batter he faced, but loaded the bases with a hit batsman and then made it a one-run game with a walk.
  • Friedlander settled down and struck out the next two batters to get out of the jam.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Hobart extended its lead with three more runs, including a two-run triple by Michael Presbrey.
  • In the ninth, Friedlander allowed a one-out single to Nolan Quinn, but struck out the final two batters to wrap up his second save.

GAME NOTES
  • McCoy was 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
  • In the eighth inning, Whiteherse posted his league-leading 31st stolen base of the season. It's the most by a Statesman since Bryan Carter '94 had 31 steals in 1994.

UP NEXT
  • Hobart will return to Liberty League play when the Statesmen welcome RIT (12-12, 5-5) to McDonough Park for a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday, April 22.
