Statesmen host Bombers in league doubleheader

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College baseball team hosted Ithaca College in a Liberty League doubleheader at McDonough Park today. The regionally-ranked Bombers took Game 1 7-0 and Game 2 13-9.

Ithaca (22-12, 11-6) limited Hobart to just two hits in the first game, a single and a double by first-year Jeremy Sanchez. Statesmen starting pitcher Aaron Forgues allowed seven hits and struck out six in six innings of work. The Bombers' Kyle Lambert threw seven scoreless innings and struck out seven to get the win. Ithaca's Garrett Callaghan delivered the big blows for the offense. He hit two home runs in a 3 for 4 effort, driving in three runs and scoring three runs.

In Game 2, the visitors were clinging to a 3-1 lead heading into the fifth, but the Bombers broke through for four runs in the fifth and sixth innings to build an 11-1 lead with Hobart down to its final six outs. Callaghan drove two more over the fence in a 2 for 3 showing at the plate. He had four RBIs and three runs scored.

Hobart started the bottom of the sixth with three straight singles to load the bases. A wild pitch scored junior Joe McCoy. After first-year Drew Bolduc walked, first-year Jackson Fowle singled to center to bring home sophomore Owen Sanders. With the bases still loaded, junior Alex Morse was hit by a pitch force home the third run. The Bombers got out of the jam with a double play.

Ithaca scored two more runs in the top of the seventh to stretch its lead to 13-4, but Hobart kept fighting. The Statesmen used four hits, two hit by pitches, a walk and an error to bring the tying run to the plate with two outs, but pitcher Dan Kellachan was able to induce a ground ball to short. Conor Pedersen made the easy throw to third for the final out.

Hobart (8-20, 2-13) and Ithaca will wrap up their three-game series at 1 p.m. Friday, April 28 in Ithaca.
