Murray scores 6, Herons win 16th straight

Davis records 100th career point

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—William Smith College sophomore attacker Katherine Murray scored a career-high six goals as the third-ranked Herons defeated Vassar College 19-8 in a Liberty League contest at Weinberg Field this afternoon.  With the win, William Smith improved to 16-0 on the season and a 10-0 record in conference play.
 
Senior Maddie Montgomery also had six points on five goals and an assist. Junior Allie McGinty (2g, 2a) had four points in the victory. With two points in today's game, senior Molly Davis now has 100 points for her career. First-year Natalie Daniels added two goals and won a game and season-high nine draw controls. Sophomore Maura Smeader played all 60 minutes in goal and made five saves.
 
Maddy Kretten (2g, 1a), Reilly Mulcahy (2g, 1a), Kateri Sanseviro (1g, 2a) led the Brewers with three points each. Tess Billings led the team with four draw controls. Lauren Johns played 53 minutes in goal for the Vassar (8-6, 5-5). She made 16 saves.  Bree MacMullen played the final seven minutes in goal and made one stop.
 
STREAKING
  • William Smith has won 16 games in a row. It is the third time in program history that the Herons are 16-0, matching the 1994 and 1995 seasons.
  • William Smith has won 24 straight Liberty League games.
  • With four points in today's game, McGinty extended her point streak to 37 games. Montgomery has recorded at least one point in 31 straight games.
 
KEY STATS
  • William Smith finished the game with a 43-14 advantage in shots, a 24-14 edge in ground balls and won the battle in the draw circle 21-10.
  • The Herons were 14-for-15 clearing the ball and Vassar was 16-for-18 in its clearing attempts.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • William Smith jumped out to a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.
  • Murray scored three of William Smith's goals in the opening frame. All three tallies were unassisted.

  • Vassar opened the second half, scoring three goals in just under 90 seconds to make it 9-6. Mulcahy and Sanseviro notched a goal and an assist during the run. Billings added a free position goal.
  • The Herons put the game out of reach, scoring 10 of the game's final 12 goals.
  • With 5:23 remaining in the third quarter, Murray started the run with her fourth goal of the game. Davis was awarded an assist on the tally.  Thirty seconds later, first-year Hannah Evans collected a feed from Montgomery and beat Johns. Kaitlin Pellechia extended the lead to six goals firing home a pass from McGinty.
  • Mulcahy briefly interrupted William Smith's run with her second goal of the half.
  • Montgomery rounded out the third quarter with her third goal of the game. The woman-up goal was unassisted.
  • Fifty-nine seconds of game time later, Montgomery added her fourth goal of the game on a free position shot. The tally came 26 seconds into the final quarter.
  • Just under a minute later, Davis slipped a free position shot across the goal line. It was her 100th career point.  McGinty extended the lead to nine goals 22 seconds later.
  • Kretten scored Vassar's lone goal of the quarter off a pass from Torkelson.
  • Montgomery, Murray and McGinty rounded out the scoring for William Smith. All three goals were unassisted.
 
MILESTONE WATCH
  • With five goals in today's game, Montgomery now has 63 this season, third on William Smith's single-season list. She is the first Heron to have a pair of 60-goal seasons since Jennifer Bertsch '95 did it in the 1994 and 1995 seasons.
  • Montgomery also moved up to fifth on William Smith's career goal list with 182 and sixth on the points list with 226.
  • With two assists, McGinty now has 94 for her career, second on the career list.
  • Davis became the 42nd player in program history to record 100 career points. She needs one draw control to become the third player in program history to win 200 draws during her career.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action Friday, May 5, when it hosts a Liberty League semifinal at Urick Stadium. As the conference's regular season champion, the Herons earned the lone first-round bye in the seven-team tournament. The game time and opponent will be decided  following Tuesday's first round games.
