Rosa posts career highs at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C.—Hobart College sophomore attackman Alex Rosa produced a career-high six points against High Point University this afternoon. The Statesmen made a late rally, but the host Panthers held on for a 14-13 win in Atlantic 10 Conference men's lacrosse action.
 
Rosa scored a career-high four goals and dished out a career-high two assists on the day to lead all scorers. Senior attackman Troy Barthelme added a hat trick and graduate student midfielder Bradley Simas logged three points on two goals and an assist. Graduate student defenseman Michael Christiansen was credited with three caused turnovers. First-year goalie Elhanan Wilson made 13 saves, including seven in the first quarter.
 
Senior faceoff specialist Adam Shea was 13-of-28 at the X. His game-high nine ground balls raised his career total to 290, overtaking Bobby Dattilo '12 (284) for second place among Division I era Statesmen.
 
The Panthers' Jason Lamb scored a team-high four goals, while Nick Rizzo (2g, 2a) and Jack VanOverbeke (3g, 1a) also had four points.
 
TIED THRU TWENTY
  • The game's opening 20 minutes were back and forth. Simas and senior midfielder Adam Davis (extra-man) staked Hobart to an early lead.
  • After HPU got on the board, Rosa scored another extra-man goal to make it 3-1 Hobart with under five minutes left in the opening quarter.
  • VanOverbeke and Rizzo tallied 36 seconds apart to tie the game at 3 heading into the second quarter.
  • Rosa opened the second quarter with another extra-man goal, but VanOverbeke scored twice in 87 seconds to give the home team its first lead.
  • Rosa tied the game for the final time with his third goal of the game.
 
PANTHERS POUNCE
  • High Point reclaimed the lead on Jack Sawyer's unassisted goal less than a minute after Rosa tied it.
  • The Panthers added two more, but by Lamb, to stretch their lead to 8-5.
  • The Statesmen got one back before the break when Sam Ward scored Hobart's fourth extra-man goal of the half just 63 seconds before the intermission.
  • High Point started the third quarter with a extra-man opportunity after Hobart was whistled for an unreleasable cross-checking penalty four seconds before halftime.
  • The Panthers cashed in, scoring twice in the first minute for a 10-6 lead.
  • Lamb capped a 6-1 HPU run at the 6:02 mark that gave his team its largest lead of the day, 11-6.
 
ILL-FATED COMEBACK
  • Over the final 20 minutes of the game, Hobart outscored High Point 7-3, but its hopes of a comeback ran out of time.
  • The Statesmen, powered by Rosa, outscored the Panthers 3-1 in the final five minutes of the third quarter. The sophomore from Syracuse scored the first Hobart goal and assisted on the next two, making it a 12-9 game heading into the final 15 minutes.
  • Shea won the opening faceoff of the fourth quarter and went straight to goal, scoring his first of the season.
  • HPU countered with back-to-back goals, but the Statesmen strung together three in a row to make it a one-goal game with 2:30 remaining. Barthelme, junior attackman Anthony Dattellas and Simas scored in succession for Hobart.
  • The Panthers won the ensuing faceoff and ran a good chuck of time of the clock before the Statesmen reclaimed possession. Hobart called a timeout to set up its final play with 42 seconds remaining. Dattellas took the final shot, but it was off the mark and HPU got the backup and ran out the clock.
 
 
GAME NOTES
  • Hobart's four extra-man goals against HPU are the most by the Statesmen this season and the most since netting five against Syracuse on March 6, 2022.
  • Rosa's two extra-man goals raised his A10-leading season total to seven. Only five players in Hobart's Division I era have scored more goals with the man advantage in a season. Jared Bebee '00 (9 in 1999) and Eric Curry '96 (9 in 1996) are tied for fourth place.
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • High Point earned its first A10 win to improve to 7-5 overall, 1-1 in the A10.
  • Hobart suffered its first A10 loss, slipping to 5-5 overall, 1-1.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Statesmen will remain on the road, traveling to Saint Joseph's University (7-4, 2-0) on Saturday, April 15. Faceoff at Sweeney Field is set for 1 p.m.
