Sayre's 22 kills lead William Smith in 3-1 win over Linfield

QUINCY, Mass.—The William Smith College volleyball team opened its season with a 3-1 win over Linfield University this evening at the Eastern Nazarene Invitational. The Herons move to 1-0 on the season, while the Wildcats fall to 0-1.

Leading the way for the Herons was sophomore Malya Sayre with an impressive 22 kills on 47 swings, hitting .383 on the match. Sayre added six digs and three big blocks to help William Smith to the win.
 
MATCH MOMENTS:
  • Both teams came out firing in the first set with both sides putting up double-digit kills. Linfield outhit William Smith in the first set as the Wildcats hit .393 compared to the Herons .306. Linfield would take the first set 25-22.
  • The Herons bounced back in set two, putting down 16 kills compared to the Wildcats' five. William smith outhit Linfield .367 to .211 and took the set 25-18. Sayre led the Herons with seven kills in set two.
  • William Smith continued its momentum from set two and continued to play well in set three. Although producing one more error than Linfield, the Herons still outhit the Wildcats and were able to take the set 25-22.
  • The Herons kept the errors to a minimum in the fourth set and continued to serve strong, serving three aces in the final set. Junior Elaina Wamhoff and first-year Maysie Malinaric led the Herons from the service line, helping William Smith to a 25-18 set win, and 3-1 victory.
MATCH STATS:
  • Sayre led the Herons with 22 kills (.383), followed by sophomores Marin Montagne with 11 (.200) and Hope Von Dohlen (.214).
  • Wamhoff recorded 40 assists, six kills (.313), five service aces, four digs and two blocks.
  • Malinaric led the Heron defense with 19 digs, while sophomore Jaylynn McCarthy chipped in 10 and Montagne chipped in eight.
 
COACHES CORNER:
 
"What a great way to start this year!" Head Coach Derryk Williams said. "After a long travel day, this group grinded out a tough win and I'm very pleased with it. We have two more matches tomorrow, so we have to rest, recover, and be back at it in the morning."
 
UP NEXT:
 
William Smith will be back in action tomorrow as it takes on host, Eastern Nazarene at 10 a.m., followed by Western New England at 2 p.m. in Quincy, Massachusetts.
