Sessions wins Laser North

Herons 3rd at KP Women’s Invite

KINGS POINT, N.Y.—The Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailing team opened the 2023-24 season with three regattas hosted by the Merchant Marine Academy this past weekend Sept. 9-10. Senior Nick Sessions highlighted the weekend for HWS, finishing first at the Laser North. In total, the Colleges had three sailors qualify for the Carl Van Duyne MAISA Singlehanded Championships. In addition, William Smith sailors were third at the Kings Point Fall Women's.
 
HWS was fourth at the Kings Point Open Dinghy.
 
LASER NORTH
  • Nick Sessions, Nico Garcia-Castrillon, and Jack Carter finished in the top the seven, earning a spot at the MAISA Singlehanded Championship later this month.
  • Sessions finished first, compiling 20 points on the weekend. He Crossed the line first three times and was in the top three in six of the eight races.
  • Garcia-Castrillon was fourth with 38 points. He won the seventh race, was second in the eighth race and third in the fifth race.
  • Carter and Owen Harrod finished in a tie for seventh with 52 points each. Carter was awarded seventh place in a tiebreaker.
  • TJ Allison finished in a tie for 10th with Cornell's Aidan Lane. Allison was awarded the head-to-head tiebreaker.
 
KINGS POINT FALL WOMENS
  • William Smith finished third on the weekend with 85 points. With only seven teams at the regatta both A and B Divisions were sailed together.
  • Junior Elizabeth Starck and senior Anna McBride finished third, compiling 32 points on the weekend. They were second among B Division boats. Starck and McBride won the fifth race and were third in the second race.
  • Junior Brook Wood and sophomore Laura Therien were ninth with 53 points. They crossed the line in five of the six races.
 
KINGS POINT Open Invite
  • HWS placed fourth with 84 points. Like the Fall Women's, the regatta had A and B Divisions combined.
  • Sophomore Juan Carlos Lacerda Jones and junior Rachel Duggan finished second with 29 points. They won the third race and were in the top eight in all six races.
  • Senior Thomas Walker and junior Frances Depke were 10th with 55 points. They crossed the line in the top 10 in four of the six races.
 
UP NEXT
HWS will be back in action next weekend, Sept. 16-17, when they compete in three regattas. William Smith sailors will be in Annapolis, Maryland, for the Faye Bennet Trophy regatta. The Colleges will also be in Ithaca, New York for the Boehringer Invitational and the Susan Rogers Memorial Regatta.
