William Smith set for Heron Invitational

The William Smith College volleyball team will host its second tournament of this season this weekend, Sept. 22-23. The Herons will welcome Stevens Institute of Technology, St. John Fisher University, and SUNY Cortland in the 2023 Heron Invitational.
 
William Smith will take on SUNY Cortland Friday, at 6:30 p.m., followed by Stevens and St. John Fisher Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
 
Sophomore Malya Sayre was named to the Liberty League Weekly Honor Roll after two strong performances at the Salisbury Tri-Match last weekend. Sayre has produced impressive numbers this season and sits third in the nation in kills per 100 points in play (13.7), sixth in points per set (5.13), 16th in kills per set (4.15), 35th in points (174.5), and 39th in aces per set (.79).

ABOUT THE HERONS
  • William Smith enters the weekend with a 6-3 record and is looking to bounce back after two losses on the road. 
  • Sayre paces the Herons with 141 kills (4.15/set), while sophomore Marin Montagne (2.44/set) and sophomore Jaylynn McCarthy (2.35/set) follow closely behind with 83 and 80 kills, respectively.
  • Junior setter Elaina Wamhoff reached the 1,000-career assist mark as a Heron, recording 291 this season. She averages a league-leading 8.56 assists per set.
  • First-year Maysie Malinaric leads the team in digs with 115 (3.38/set). Montagne has chipped in 84 digs this season (2.47/set).
  • William Smith shows a strong presence at the net, recording 39 blocks as a team. Leading the way for the Herons is first-year Lindsay Umlauf with 19, followed by McCarthy with 11.
ABOUT THE RED DRAGONS
  • Cortland enters the weekend at 7-2 after competing at the Scranton Electric City Invite, where the Red Dragons defeated both Scranton and Haverford.
  • Anna Pilkey leads the Red Dragons with 100 kills (2.78/set).
  • Meadow Wittman leads the team in assists with 161 (4.74/set).
ABOUT THE DUCKS
  • Stevens enters the weekend 5-2 after a sweep of Delaware Valley in its MAC Conference opener.
  • Cleo Shannon leads the Ducks with 75 kills (3.13/set).
  • Molly Harris has a team-leading 124 assists (4.96/set).
ABOUT THE CARDINALS
  • St. John Fisher enters the weekend 3-7 after competing in the RIT Invitational last weekend. The Cardinals defeated RIT and Oswego State and fell to the University of Rochester.
  • Delayne Young leads the team with 93 kills (2.45/set).
  • Reilly Morrow has a team-leading 268 assists (7.66/set).
