#4 Falcons outlast Herons 3-2

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team pushed fourth-ranked Messiah University to the brink, but the Falcons held on for a 3-2 win on McCooey Field this afternoon. With the win, Messiah improved to 6-1, while the Herons slipped to 5-4.

KEY STAT
  • Messiah held a 17-9 advantage in shots. After William Smith junior Rebecca Mantione scored in the 38th minute to make it a one-goal game, the Falcons turned up the defensive pressure and did not allow another Heron shot.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Messiah outshot William Smith 5-1 in the first quarter, opening the day's scoring in the 11th minute on fifth-year Nicole Shank's penalty corner goal. Senior Madi Johnson earned an assist on the play.
  • The Falcons added to their lead in the 17th minute, taking advantage of a William Smith miscue. Junior Hailey Wormer pounced on a Heron turnover in the circle and fired a shot from the right slot into the back of the cage.
  • Senior Alaura Enright got William Smith on the board in the 25th minute, batting home a rebound on a scramble in front. It was her third goal of the season.
  • Messiah took a 3-1 lead into halftime when Shank scored just over two minutes before the break. On a penalty corner, the Falcons got a shot on frame, but Heron senior goalie Kristen McCormick (2 svs) kicked the shot away. Unfortunately for the home team, Shank corralled the rebound and fired it home.
  • In the 36th minute, William Smith had a prime opportunity to score snuffed out by a heads up defensive play by sophomore Lillian Peters. On a restart in the Herons' defensive end, graduate student Kate Barilla fired a 40-yard cross field pass that sprung graduate student Mackenzie Wodka on a breakaway. She made a nifty move around fifth-year goalie Catie Brubaker (3 svs) for a chance on an open goal. Wodka shot, but Peters made a clutch defensive save to preserve the Falcons' two goal advantage.
  • Less than three minutes later, Mantione did find the back of the net, but William Smith was not able to generate another scoring chance.
  • The Herons blanked the Falcons in the second half as senior goalie Brittany Foster made three saves Barilla added a pair of defensive saves in the fourth quarter.

UP NEXT
  • William Smith will return to Liberty League play, visiting Vassar for a noon match on Sept. 30.
