HWS 3rd at MAISA Match Race

9/25/2023 4:58:00 PM

The Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailing team finished third in a weather-shortened Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Match Race Championship in Annapolis, Maryland this past weekend. With a majority of the northeast coastline dealing with the effects of Tropical Storm Ophelia, racing was limited to Sunday at the conference championship regatta.

The Colleges were also scheduled to compete in three regattas in Kings Point, New York, but the racing was canceled after Merchant Marine Academy shut down their athletics and waterfront operations over the weekend.

MAISA Match Race Championship
  • Nick Sessions, F. Stephen Martocci, Elizabeth Starck and Jack Deely represented HWS.
  • On Sunday, the first two flights of the regatta were completed before a rain storm blew in and took the wind away.
  • The Colleges advanced to the semifinals, finishing second in Group B.
  • In the semifinals, Georgetown swept HWS, securing a spot in the finals for the Hoyas.
  • The Colleges took on SUNY Maritime in the petite final. The Mariners won Race 1 to take an early 1-0 lead, but Sessions, Martocci, Starck and Deeley won the final two races to place third overall.
  • Georgetown won the Intrepid Trophy as conference Champions, defeating the Naval Academy 2-1.
