Mules trip up Statesmen 3-1

GENEVA, N.Y.--The Hobart College soccer team was defeated by Muhlenberg College 3-1 in a non-conference contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Mules scored twice in the second half as they pulled away from the Statesmen.  Hobart is now 1-1-0 on the season.
 
Guillermo Castañeda Chang played all 90 minutes in goal and made a career-high nine saves, including seven in the second half as he tried to keep Hobart in the game.
 
Elie Khalil's brace led the way for Muhlenberg (1-1-0). Ben Mulford played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Muhlenberg dominated the stat sheet, finishing with a 26-8 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
  • The Statesmen played the final 55 minutes of the game down a man after a red card was issued late in the first half.
 
FIRST HALF
  • The Mules took control of the game early in the contest firing five of the first six shots on target.
  • Greyson King had the first shot of the contest in the sixth minute. His attempt from inside the 18-yard box was turned aside by Castañeda Chang.
  • Khalil opened the scoring in the 13th minute.  He pounced on a rebound and buried the loose ball in the back of the net. Sebastian Tis was awarded an assist on the goal.
  • Fifty-two seconds later, senior Liam Dillon tied the game with his first goal of the season. He fired a shot from the left side of the 18-yard box off of the right goalpost and into the back of the net. Marcelo Suarez was awarded an assist on the goal. 
  • In the 34th minute, Mano Veldt nearly gave Hobart the lead, but his shot was stopped by Mulford.
  • Muhlenberg controlled the final 10 minutes of the half and finished the stanza with an 11-4 edge in shots.
 
SECOND HALF
  • With a player advantage, the Mules controlled the opening minutes of the second half, testing Castañeda Chang. The senior did everything he could to help keep the Statesmen in the game, making several diving stops in the first eight minutes of the frame.
  • Muhlenberg's pressure finally cracked the Statesmen in the 71st minute. Khalil once again pounced on a rebound and slipped a shot across the goal line. Chris Richards was awarded an assist on the goal.
  • Will Curtis rounded out the scoring in the 83rd minute. His first goal of the season was assisted by Jason Edelstein.
 
 
UP NEXT
Hobart will be back in action next weekend, Sept. 9-10, when it heads to Baltimore, Md., for the 2023 Blue Jay Invitational. The Statesmen will take on fourth-ranked University of Mary Washington on Saturday at 11 a.m. and the hosts, seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins, on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
