#20 Herons drop nonconference matchup at Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.—The nationally ranked William Smith College field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season at Ursinus College this afternoon, 3-1. The Herons fall to 1-1 on the season while the Bears move to 1-1.
 
Graduate student Kate Brilla tallied her first goal of the season and second of her career as the Herons fell on the road. Barilla led William Smith with six shots, all of which were on goal. Senior Kristen McCormick played all 60 minutes in goal for the Herons, recording four saves.
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • After a scoreless first quarter, Ursinus broke the deadlock at the 20-minute mark when the Bears earned a penalty corner. Mary Lauren Franz sent the ball to Lauren Breisch who set up Maeve Montgomery, who ripped a shot past McCromick to take the lead.
  • The Bears doubled the lead in the 35th minute when Amanda Groeling recorded her first goal of the season. Marie Brainard was credited with the assist.
  • With 1:32 remaining in the third quarter, Ursinus added to the scoring again. This time coming off the stick of Brainard to take the 3-0 lead.
  • William Smith would strike with three minutes remaining in regulation after being awarded a penalty corner. Senior Sofia Pattillo sent the ball to junior Hannah Huston who set up Barilla on the strike. Huston would be credited with her team-leading third assist of the year

William Smith will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 6, when it welcomes SUNY Geneseo to Geneva. The Herons are set to take on the Knights at 6 p.m. on McCooey Field.
