Second half surge sends #7 William Smith past Arcadia 4-1

HAVERFORD, Pa.—The seventh-ranked William Smith College soccer team scored three goals in the second half as it knocked off Arcadia University 4-1 in a non-conference contest at Walton Field this afternoon. The Herons finished the 2023 Haverford Kick-Off Classic with a 2-0-0 overall record.
 
Four different Herons scored in the victory. Senior Kirsten Nelson played all 90 minutes in goal and made four saves.
 
Abby Fuchs started in goal for the Knights (1-1-0) and made four saves in just over 66 minutes of work. Jordan Polen made five saves in 24 minutes in the Arcadia goal. Alexis Rabold scored the goal for Arcadia.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • William Smith finished the contest with a 24-10 advantage in shots.
  • The Herons held a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
  • William Smith is 2-0-0 against Arcadia.
 
FIRST HALF
  • The first five minutes of the game was a feeling-out period for both teams. Rabold had an opportunity in the third minute that was blocked by a William Smith defender. At the opposite end of the field, Shayna Straney had an attempt blocked by an Arcadia defender.
  • Straney opened the scoring in the 24th minute. She ran onto a leading pass from Ava Ruppersberger and slipped a shot between the goalie's legs.
  • Seneca Blakely-Armitage had an opportunity to give William Smith a 2-0 lead, but her shot was punched aside by Fuchs at the last second.
 
SECOND HALF
  • Arcadia tied the game 1-1 in the 48th minute. Off of a set piece, Raibold buried her second goal of the season. Madison Toyama and Rachael Mahlau-Heinert were awarded assists on the goal.
  • Julia Berg's first goal of the season gave the Herons a 2-1 lead. The goal was assisted by her sister Katrine Berg.
  • Two minutes later, Julia DiMenna notched her first goal of the season, chipping a shot over the Arcadia goalie.
  • Senior Emma Faso rounded out the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 69th minute.
  • Moira van der Putt had a scoring chance in the final seconds of the game turned aside by Jordan Polen.
 
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 6, when it welcomes Geneseo to Cozzens Field. The Herons home opener is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
