#20 William Smith welcomes Geneseo in midweek matchup

Barilla, Mantione named to Liberty League honor roll

The nationally-ranked William Smith College field hockey team will welcome out-of-conference foe, SUNY Geneseo, in a midweek matchup Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. on McCooey Field.
 
Graduate student Kate Barilla and junior Rebecca Mantione were named to the Liberty League weekly honor roll after their strong performances in the opening weekend of the season.

Fans who cannot make it to McCooey Field on Wednesday, can follow the action with HWS All-Access Video and Live Stats. The game will be broadcast on WHWS-FM (105.7 in Geneva).
 
ABOUT THE HERONS
  • William Smith (1-1) boasts a league-leading 27.5 shots per game and 20.0 shots-on-goal per game (.727).
  • Mantione (1G, 1A), junior Hannah Huston (3A), and senior Sofia Pattillo (1G, 1A) lead the team with three points each.
  • On the defensive side, Barilla and fifth-year senior Lauren Jackson have each tallied one goal and one defensive save each.
  • Senior goalie Kristen McCormick has played a majority of minutes in goal for the Herons, securing a 1.85 goals against average and a .727 save percentage.
ABOUT THE KNIGHTS
  • Geneseo (2-0) has averaged 13.5 shots per game, with a shots-on-goal percentage of .481.
  • Sam Lewis leads the Knights with four points on two goals.
  • Sarah Quinlan has made one save throughout 120 minutes of action in goal.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Wednesday's matchup will be the 24th meeting between the Herons and the Knights.
  • William Smith leads the series 19-5, with a 13-3 edge in Geneva.
  • In their last meeting on Sept. 7, 2022, the Knights defeated the Herons 3-2 in Geneseo. Pattillo was credited with a goal and an assist in the loss.

  • The head coaches in Wednesday's contest are both William Smith field hockey alums.
  • Sophie Riskie '07 is in her third season as head coach of William Smith. She is the Herons career points leader (217) and led the team to three NCAA tournaments.
  • Margaret McConnell Schaffer '14 is in her sixth season at the helm of Geneseo. She produced 59 career points and helped the Herons to three NCAA tournament appearances.
