Molly Matthews named new assistant sailing coach

Matthews joins HWS sailing staff

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart and William Smith Colleges Head Sailing Coach Scott Iklé '84 recently announced that Molly Matthews will join the sailing staff as an assistant coach.
 
"We are excited to welcome Molly to HWS," Iklé said. "She will infuse the team with enthusiasm. Her demonstrated expertise will help with all aspects of the program. She will be a great addition to the coaching staff."
 
Matthews graduated from Roger Williams in May with a bachelor's degree in biology. She was a four-year member of the Hawks' sailing team, serving as captain during her junior and senior seasons. Matthews helped Roger Williams finish second at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Team Race National Championships in the spring of 2021 and 2022. In 2023, she helped Roger Williams' team racing squad place fifth at the national championship. Following her senior season, she was named an ICSA All-American Crew Honorable Mention. Matthews was named Second Team All-New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association Crew twice and was a two-time ICSA All-Academic Team selection. She was a member NEISA Executive Board, serving as the undergraduate president.
 
Matthews spent this past summer as the sailing director at Little Traverse Yacht Club in Michigan. She helped conduct club racing events as a PRO and race committee member. Matthews also served as the race team coach for the Little Traverse Sailors at the Little Traverse Yacht Club where she taught beginner sailboat racing skills in 420s and lasers to youths ages 12-16.
 
Matthews is a US Sailing Level 1 Instructor and is a Red Cross certified Lifeguard.
 
HWS will begin its 2023-24 season on Saturday, Sept. 9, when it heads to Kings Point, N.Y., for three regattas. The Colleges will compete in the Laser North, the Kings Point Fall Women's and the Kings Point Open Dinghy regattas.
