Football welcomes Morrisville State for home opener

The Hobart College football team will play its first home game of the 2023 season when it welcomes the Morrisville State Mustangs to Urick Stadium Saturday, Sept. 9. The opening kickoff on Boswell Field is set for 1 p.m.

FOR THE RECORD

  • Both teams bring a 1-0 record into Saturday's non-conference game. The Statesmen opened with the season with a 31-9 win at Alfred, while the Mustangs also prevailed on the road with a 24-14 triumph over Kean.

SERIES SNAPSHOT

  • This will be the fifth matchup between the Statesmen and the Mustangs.
  • Hobart leads the series 3-1.
  • The Mustangs won last year's matchup 24-13 in Morrisville. The Mustangs seized control of the game after recovering a pair of second quarter fumbles by the Statesmen, both were returned for touchdowns.
  • The 2022 match up was the first look at this year's starting quarterback Johnny Colombi, who had to step up due to injuries. He completed half his passes for 157 yards and a touchdown, as well as using his legs for 57 yards rushing. Wide receiver Chris Bartosic was his favorite target, recording a career high 112 yards.

HOBART ON OFFENSE

  • The Statesmen offense came out firing in Week 1, putting up 331 yards and 31 points against Alfred.
  • The Hobart ground attack was on full display, led by the duo of Rayshawn Boswell and Tim Denham Jr., who combined for 178 yards and three touchdowns.
  • The offensive line looked sharp week one, clearing lanes for the running backs and giving quarterback Johnny Colombi time to throw, only allowing one sack.

HOBART ON DEFENSE

  • Linebacker Peterson Monexant lead the charge for the Statesmen defense, registering a team-high 10 tackles and 1.5 sacks, including a strip sack which was returned 44 yards for a touchdown by senior defensive back Abdoulaye Diallo.
  • The Statesmen front seven where in the Alfred backfield all night, racking up eight tackles for loss and three sacks.
  • The secondary had control over the air, tallying five pass breakups and two interceptions (by Chris Ntumba and Joe McCoy).

ABOUT MORRISVILLE

  • Senior quarterback Steven Frerichs passed 235 yards and two touchdowns at Kean. He also lead the Mustangs in rushing with 52 yards and a touchdown.
  • Senior wideout Jarrell Chaney lead the team in receiving with 97 yards and a touchdown.
  • Junior linebacker Evan Salvaggio was their leader in tackles with nine.
