Elmira sneaks past William Smith 3-1

PINE VALLEY, N.Y.—The William Smith College hockey team was defeated by Elmira 3-1 in a New England Hockey Conference contest at The Murray Athletic Center this afternoon.  The Herons are now 14-6-1 overall this season with a 9-4-1 mark in play.
 
Emma Faso scored for the Herons. Senior Annie Hauser played all 60 minutes in goal and made 47 saves.
 
Emma Bradbury scored twice in the third period to lead Elmira. Emily Lenzen had two assists. Leonie Kuehberger stopped 25 shots as she earned the win in goal. With the weekend sweep, the Soaring Eagles are now 14-6-1 on the season with a 11-2-1 mark in conference play.
 
STREAKING
  • With a 3-for-3 effort on the penalty kill this afternoon, the Herons have gone 13 games without allowing a power-play goal. Opponents are 3-for-67 with the extra attacker against William Smith this season.
  • The loss snapped the Herons' nine-game road winning streak.
 
KEY STATS
  • Elmira finished the game with a 50-26 advantage in shots on goal. The Herons and Soaring Eagles each had 14 shots on goal in the third period.
 
GAME MOMENTS
  • Elmira opened the scoring at the 13:12 mark of the second period. Anna Lugge wristed a shot past Hauser. Lenzen and Erika Goleniak had assists on the tally.
  • Faso tied the game at the 5:03 mark of the third period. Her fifth goal of the season was assisted by Grace Romeo and Annabel Ziskin.
  • The Soaring Eagles regained the lead just over one minute later. Bradbury ripped a shot past Hauser. Lenzen had the assist on the goal.
  • Bradbury added her second goal of the game late in the third period. Anna Lugge and Mo McBride had helpers on the insurance goal.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 2, when it welcomes Johnson & Wales to The Cooler. The game will be the Herons' first Hockey Fights Cancer Night.
