HWS 3rd at NY Maritime Open

The Hobart and William Smith sailing team was on the water this weekend, Sept. 28-29, competing in three regattas. The weekend was highlighted by a third place finish at the NY Maritime open.
 
In addition, William Smith sailors were in Providence, Rhode Island, for the ACC Eliminations Regatta, placing ninth. Four Statesmen raced for the Carl Van Duyne Trophy, the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Assocition Men's Singlehanded Championship.
 
Maritime Open
  • In Throggs Neck, New York, sailors were met with rain bands on Saturday Morning that created damp but breezy conditions. With eight knot winds out of the northeast. Sunday saw 8-12 knot winds.
  • First-years Sam Carson and Colin Byrne sailed in B Division team, finishing tied for first with 51 points. Webb Institute won the division based on the head to head tiebreaker. Carson and Byrne were in the top 10 in all but 1 race.
  • The pair of Sophomore Noah Hemingway and junior Elijah Goldman competed in A Division, finishing sixth with 85 points.
  • Hemingway and Carson served as skippers for their races, Goldman and Byrne were crew.
  • HWS was third overall, finishing the weekend with 136 points.
 
Women's ACC Eliminations
  • In Providence racing was mostly limited to Sunday due to light winds.
  • The B Division team of first-year Deana Fedulova, first-year Olivia Wilkins, and sophomore Ella Donaldson led the way for the Herons, finishing seventh with 74 points.
  • Wilkins and Donaldson also competed in the A Division with senior Elizabeth Starck, and first-year Sabrina Starck, finishing 11th with 104 points.
  • Elizabeth Starck, Sabrina Starck, and Fedulova were the skippers for the races. Wilkins and Donaldson served as crew for both divisions.
  • The Herons finished ninth overall, with a total of 178 points. With its finish, William Smith qualified for the Women's ACC's in Annapolis, Maryland in a few weeks.
 
Carl Van Duyne Trophy
  • In Annapolis, a light wind out of the southeast delayed the sailing a few times on Saturday, but seven races were competed. Sunday saw breezes ranging from eight to 12 knots out of the northeast.
  • Junior Nico Garcia-Castrillon led the way for the Statesmen, finishing in 11th place with 138 points. He was in the top-10 in seven races.
  • Owen Harrod, Dante Garcia, and Jack Carter also raced, finishing 16th, 17th and 18th, respectively.
 
HWS is back on the water next weekend, Oct. 5-6, when they head back to Annapolis to compete in the Dinghy ACC Eliminations hosted by Navy.
