10/14/2024 3:58:00 PM

The Hobart and William Smith sailing team won the David Lee Arnoff Trophy on Seneca Lake on Saturday. It is the eighth time in the 11-year history of the regatta that the trophy will remain in Bozzuto Boathouse.

In addition, HWS placed fifth in the Nevins Trophy in Kings Point, New York, and William Smith competed in the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship Finals in Annapolis, Maryland.

DAVID LEE ARNOFF TROPHY
  • Sailors on Seneca Lake were greeted with cool temps and strong northwesterly winds. The day slowly warmed and the breeze slowly dropped allowing for the regatta to be completed on Saturday.
  • Twelve races were completed in total with A and B divisions being combined into one.
  • HWS had two entries in the regatta. The coed team finished first with the William Smith entry taking fourth.
  • HWS was led by first-years James Kopack and Lucy Lack, who took first place with 40 points. The pair finished in the top five in 10 of their 12 races and notched four wins.
  • The B Division team of junior Nico Garcia-Castrillon and sophomore Stella Kim finished in sixth with 69 points. They were in the top ten in all but two races and finished first once.
  • Senior Brook Wood and sophomore Reilly Roedel finished second overall, 13 points behind Kopack and Lack. Wood and Roedel had top-five finishes in all but two races and won twice.
  • The Herons' B Division team was comprised of sophomores Bennett O'Keefe and Maya Mahoney, who finished with 121 points. They had six top-ten finishes.

NEVINS TROPHY
  • On Saturday, the regatta started off with a blustery northwestern breeze that oscillated to varying degrees allowing for eight races to be completed. Six additional races were completed on Sunday in varying conditions.
  • HWS finished fifth of 18 teams, compiling 187 points on the weekend.
  • The B Division team of sophomore Jeffrey Klempen, junior Elijah Goldman, and senior Rachel Duggan finished third with 75 points. They were in the top 10 in 12 races, picking up four second place finishes.
  • Klempen served as skipper, with Goldman as crew for the first six races and Duggan as crew for the final eight races.
  • The A Division team was comprised of junior Juan Carlos Lacerda Jones, sophomore Henry Breslin and senior Frances Depke. Lacerda Jones served as skipper, with Breslin as crew for races 1-6 and Depke as crew for races 7-14.
  • The trio finished seventh in the A Division with 112 points and nine top-ten finishes.

WOMEN'S ATLANTIC COAST CHAMPIONSHIP
  • In Annapolis, races started in 5-10 knot breezes out of the northwest, but conditions deteriorated forcing the eighth race to be called off for both divisions. Sunday brought a wind delay, but the breeze filled in allowing for the final nine races to be sailed.
  • The Herons were led by their A Division team of first-years Deana Fedulova and Olivia Wilkins, who finished 15th in their division with 197 points.
  • The B Division team was comprised of senior Elizabeth Starck, first-year Sabrina Starck, and sophomore Ella Donaldson. They finished 18th in the division with 251 points.
  • The Herons finished with 448 total points, 18th overall.
