The Hobart and William Smith sailing team returned to the water this weekend, Oct. 19-20, for a pair of regattas. HWS won Open Atlantic Coast Tournament in New London, Connecticut.

The team was also in Cambridge, Massachusetts competing in the Oberg Trophy hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

OPEN ATLANTIC COAST TOURNAMENT
- Sailing was contested on the Thames River. The regatta started with a 4-6 knot breeze out of the North that died and turned the water glassy. In the afternoon a southern easterly breeze filled in at around 6-8 knots.
- Fifteen races (8A, 7B) were contested on Friday with the final 11 races (5a, 6B) were sailed on Sunday.
- HWS dominated the competition, finishing with 90 points. The second place team, Jacksonville University, finished with 138 point, 48 points behind.
- In B Division, sophomore Jeffrey Klempen and senior Rachel Duggan finished first with a total of 36 points. The duo won six races and were in the top three in 10 times. The University of Pennsylvania finished second 29 points back.
- The A Division team of junior Juan Carlos Lacerda Jones and senior Frances Depke, finished with 54 points. They were second in their division and had four victories.
- Lacerda Jones and Klempen were skippers for the races with Depke and Duggan scompeteing as crew.

OBERG TROPHY
- On Saturday, teams arrived to little to no wind. Gusts of 3-5 knots would come in and disappear quickly, allowing for only three races (2B, 1C) to be completed. Sunday the breeze was constant from the west all day, averaging 3-5 knots. Twenty-one races (8A, 6B, 7C) were completed on Sunday.
- HWS finished 14th overall.
- The C Division team of first-year Simon Hammarlund and sophomore Reilly Roedel placed 10th, finishing the weekend with 87 points. They recorded four top-10 finishes.
- In B Division first-year Kenelm Guinness and sophomore Stella Kim finished 12th in their division. They had four top 10 finishes and ocncluded the weekend with 86 points.
- First-years James Kopack and Lucy Lack sailed in A dDvision team. The duo finished 13th with 96 points.
- Kopack, Guiness, and Hammarlund served as skippers for the races. Lack, Kim, and Roedel were crew.

UP NEXT
Sailing is back on the water next weekend, Oct. 26-27, when it head to St. Mary's City, Maryland, to compete in the War Memorial Regatta. The Herons will also be in action in Norfolk, Virginia, to compete in the Middle Atlantic Inter-olleigate Sailing Association Fall Women's Championship regatta, hosted by Old Dominion University.
