Herons move to 18-3 with 2 wins at Hamilton Tri-Match

CLINTON, NY –The William Smith volleyball team extended its win streak to four-straight with two wins this afternoon as the Herons swept Wheaton (Mass.) before defeating Hamilton 3-1 at the Hamilton Tri-Match. With the wins, William Smith moves to 18-3 on the season with a 6-1 mark in conference play.

Junior Malya Sayre led the Herons through two matches, tallying 25 kills (.143) and 34 digs, including her 11th double-double of the season. She also added five service aces and two blocks in the wins. Classmate Hope Von Dohlen added 24 kills (.259) and four blocks through two matches, while junior Jaylynn McCarthy tallied 14 kills (.333), six digs, four blocks and one service ace.

First-year setter Delainy Williams continued to shine for the Herons this afternoon. She tallied 75 assists, averaging 10.71 assists per set in the wins. Williams also added 20 digs, four service aces and four kills (.182) through seven sets.
  
MATCH MOMENTS:
 
Match 1 (Wheaton):

  • The Herons opened the match with 12 kills (.143) as a team compared to Lyons' nine (.028). Sayre led William Smith with five kills (.143) in the opening set to help the Herons to a 25-19 win to grab the early lead.
  • William Smith came out firing in the second set and put down 17 kills (.244) as a team and held Wheaton to a match-low seven kills (.057). Six different Herons recorded at least two kills in the second set to earn a 25-20 win in the second set, extending their lead to 2-0.
  • The Herons continued on their momentum in the third set and combined for 11 kills (.333) as a team. William Smith also tallied three service aces in the set to earn a convincing 25-17 win to close out the sweep of Lyons.

Match stats:

  • McCarthy (.467) and Sayre (.097) paced the Herons with nine kills each, while Von Dohlen chipped in eight (.278). First-year Emily Fulton tallied seven kills (.190) while classmate Arielle Newsome chipped in five (.375).
  • Williams recorded a match-high 30 assists in the win. She added nine digs and two kills (.167) in the sweep.
  • The Herons combined for 53 digs as team and had two players record double-digit digs. Sayre led the team with 16, while first-year libero Kali Vanderhoof tallied 12. Williams added nine digs, while junior defensive specialist Cydney Fernandez and Fulton added seven each in the win.
  • William Smith tallied five service aces in the sweep and were led by Sayre and Fulton with two each. McCarthy tallied one service ace for the Herons.

Match 2 (Hamilton):

  • The Herons came out firing in the opening set, putting down a match-high 19 kills (.157) as a team and were led by Sayre with eight kills (.211) in set one. The errors plagued William Smith in set one and were matched by an efficient Hamilton side that put down 10 kills (.205) to slip away with a 25-23 win in the opening set.
  • William Smith responded well in the second set and put down 12 kills as a team (.176). The Herons held the Continentals to a match-low seven kills (.000) to earn a convincing 25-17 win in set two to tie the match at 1-1.
  • The Herons continued on their momentum into the third set and put down 14 kills on a match-high .286 hitting percentage. William Smith also recorded four service aces as a team to earn a dominating 25-15 win in set three.
  • William Smith closed out the match with a 25-22 win in set four. Despite recording only 12 kills (.179) compared to Hamilton's 16 (.238), the Herons continued to use strong serving to keep the Continentals out of system. Von Dohlen led the team with six kills to help William Smith close out the match on top.

Match stats:

  • Sayre (.174) and Von Dohlen (.250) paced the Herons with 16 kills each in the win. Junior Marin Montagne chipped in nine kills (.222), while Newsome added six (.278) through four sets.
  • Williams put on an impressive performance from the setter position, recording a match-high 45 assists and 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. She added four service aces and two kills (.200) in the win.
  • William Smith combined for 72 digs as a team and had four players record double digit digs. Sayre led the team with 18 while Vanderhoof tallied 17. Williams and Montagne chipped in 11 digs each in the four-set win.
  • The Herons put on a dominant performance from the service line and tallied 13 aces as a team. Montagne led William Smith with five aces through four sets, while Williams chipped in four. Sayre added three service aces in the win.
