ITHACA, N.Y.— Senior Hannah Huston scored with 4:57 remaining in regulation to lift the William Smith field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over No. 19 Ithaca this afternoon in its Liberty League opener. With the win, the Herons move to 5-6 on the season and 1-0 in conference play, while the Bombers fall to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the Liberty League.
Huston's game-winning-goal was her second tally of the season, while first-year Mia Batchelder recorded her fourth goal of the season. Batchelder has scored in three of the last four games and sits at nine points on four goals and one assist in her rookie season. First-year Caroline Kogut was credited with the assist on both William Smith goals this afternoon and now sits at a team-leading 13 points on five goals and three assists.
Ithaca held a 13-8 advantage in shots against William Smith, including a 9-7 edge in shots on target. The Herons flipped the script in the second half, outshooting the Bombers 7-4 to grab the momentum back and earn the win. Ithaca also held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners, earning three in the opening quarter.
First-year Baker Jeremiah played all 60 minutes in goal for the Herons and recorded a career-high eight saves in the win. All eight of her saves came in the first half. She is now 5-6 on the season and has earned the first conference win of her collegiate career.
MATCH MOMENTS:
- The Bombers opened the scoring in the 19th minute after being awarded back-to-back penalty corners. Emma Garver received the ball at the top of the arc and fired a shot on target. Meara Bury dove across the face of the goal and deflected the shot past Jeremiah to give Ithaca a 1-0 lead.
- William Smith responded well in the second half, applying the pressure on the Ithaca backline to even the score at 1-1. After a foul was called on Ithaca, Kogut fired a long pass from about 40 yards out into the arc. Her pass found a cutting Batchelder who deflected the shot into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
- The Herons scored with under five minutes in regulation to grab their first lead of the day. William Smith earned back-to-back penalty corners which resulted in the ball on the stick of Kogut at the top of the arc. She dished a pass to the left to Huston who fired off a shot past the Bomber goalie to give the Herons a 2-1 lead.
- Ithaca tried to respond off a penalty corner with under two minutes remaining, but the William Smith defense stood tall. The Bombers fired off back-to-back shots, which were both blocked by first-year Ana Dios Vidal.

William Smith will be back in action Wednesday, Oct. 9, when it concludes its four-game road trip at No. 18 Rochester. The conference showdown between the Herons and the Yellowjackets is set for 7 p.m. at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
