#11 Herons edge Lions 2-1, advance to NCAA 2nd Round

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith first-year Nell Dwyer's first collegiate goal in the 72nd minute propelled the 11th-ranked Heron soccer team to a 2-1 win over Penn State Harrisburg in a NCAA tournament first round game on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With the win, William Smith improves to 13-3-4 overall this season.
 
Dwyer and sophomore Kaleigh Darby scored for William Smith. Graduate student Kirsten Nelson played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves.
 
Julia Hughes scored for the Lions, who conclude their season with a 10-6-5 overall record. Sydney Mulka started in goal and made four saves.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • William Smith finished the game with an 11-5 advantage in shots, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Herons had five corner kicks and Penn State Harrisburg had three.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Darby opened the scoring in the seventh minute.  She collected a pass from Moira van der Putt and slotted a shot into the lower left corner of the cage. It was Darby's fifth goal of the season.
  • Hughes tied the game 1-1 in the 65th minute.  She stole a ball from a William Smith defender juked around Nelson and fired a shot into the net. It was her ninth goal of the season.
  • Dwyer pocketed the deciding goal six minutes later. Off a corner kick, she ran onto a bouncing ball and chipped a shot across the goal line. Junior Ruth Hotaling had an assist on the goal.
 
MATCH MOMENTS
  • In the sixth minute, Hotaling had the game's first scoring chance, but her shot was punched over the crossbar by Mulka.
  • One minute later, on a corner kick, Ava Brazie had a chance that was turned aside by the goalie.
  • The Lions nearly tied the game in the 40th minute, but Sara Toche-Manley's shot went just over the crossbar.
  • Senior Marjorie Plants nearly gave William Smith a 3-1 lead in the 79th minute, but her shot from outside the 18-yard box was turned aside by Mulka.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action tomorrow, Nov. 17, against seventh-ranked Tufts. The second round game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
