Sulmasy's double-double leads Herons in loss to Brockport

GENEVA, N.Y.—Despite a strong opening quarter, the William Smith basketball team fell 76-62 in a nonconference matchup with SUNY Brockport in Bristol Gymnasium this afternoon. The Herons fall to 0-3 on the season, while the Golden Eagles move to 4-1 overall.

First-year Jojo Sulmasy led William Smith with a career-high 17 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Sophomore Amelia McCulley chipped in 12 points, five rebounds and two steals in the loss. Senior Molly Walsh added nine points, four rebounds and one steal for the Herons.

Stephanie Jean-Baptiste led the Golden Eagles with a game-high 19 points and two steals. She was followed by Kaileigh Hunt with 14 points and Harmony Philo with 12.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Brockport jumped out to a 6-0 lead before back-to-back jumpers by Walsh and Sulmasy brought William Smith within two.
  • The two sides traded points for a majority of the opening quarter until the Herons grabbed their first lead of the day with a three pointer from Walsh and a layup by Sulmasy to give William Smith the late momentum in the opening quarter.
  • The Herons maintained their lead as Sulmasy hit a deep three pointer to close out the opening quarter up 21-18.
  • The Golden Eagles responded well in the second quarter and went on a 15-6 run to grab a six-point lead.
  • Brockport maintained the momentum for the remainder of the second quarter and extended their lead to nine heading into the half.
  • The Golden Eagles went on an 8-0 run to open the second half to give Brockport a 48-31 lead.
  • William Smith used strong free throw shooting as the Herons went 7-of-8 at the line to stop Brockport's momentum and bring them within 12 heading into the final quarter.
  • The final quarter saw the back-and-forth battle continue. William Smith locked in on the boards, grabbing 13 rebounds as a team to keep them in the game.
  • The Herons grabbed the late momentum and went on a 9-1 run, including a deep three by sophomore Charlotte Miller, to end the game.
  • Despite the late comeback, William Smith wasn't able to make a run for the game as the Golden Eagles used the clock to their advantage. Brockport closed out the contest on top 76-62.

The Herons will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 26, when they welcome Rochester to Geneva for a nonconference showdown. Action between the Herons and the Yellowjackets is set for 6 p.m. in Bristol Gymnasium.
