Hobart holds off late Rochester charge for 66-61 victory

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart basketball team never trailed Rochester, but had to weather a late charge by the visiting Yellowjackets to secure a 66-61 victory in Bristol Gym tonight. The Statesmen dominated on the glass, outrebounding the Yellowjackets by 19 while the trio of senior Carter Meshanic, sophomore Alex Moesch and senior Hunter Meshanic combined for 45 points.

Carter Meshanic led all scorers with 17 points to go along with nine rebounds. Moesch posted 16 points, five rebounds and three assists. Hunter Meshanic contributed 12 points and eight boards. Sophomore Dorian Paki grabbed a game and career-high 13 rebounds while scoring eight points and blocking three shots.

Rochester also had three players in double figures led by Nate Sock's 15 points. Logan Jagodzinski and Ethan McEachern each chipped in 13 points.

FOR THE RECORD
  • Hobart won for the third straight time to improve to 4-2 on the season.
  • Rochester saw its five-game winning streak snapped and slipped to 5-2 on the year.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Statesmen grabbed 49 rebounds on the night compared to just 30 for the visitors.
  • It's the widest rebounding margin for Hobart since outrebounding Bard by 22 (45-23) on Jan. 13, 2023.
  • The Statesmen's 49 rebounds were the most by Hobart in a game since grabbing 50 caroms against Ithaca on Jan. 26, 2024.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hobart opened the game on a 7-0 run that saw Hunter and Carter make baskets followed by a 3-pointer from Moesch.
  • Rochester battled back to tie the game at 11 on a 3-pointer by Sock.
  • First-year Allen Mordi answered with a 3-pointer at the other end of the floor and the Statesmen never relinquished their lead again.
  • Hobart took a 29-20 lead into halftime after limiting the Yellowjackets to 25% shooting in the opening 20 minutes.
  • Hobart maintained a three to five possession lead for most of the second half.
  • The Statesmen used five straight points late in the frame to build its largest lead of the night.
  • First-year Monty Nedd made 1-of-2 at the free throw line, Moesch scored a pull-up jumper and Hunter Meshanic cashed in on one of Hobart's 15 offensive rebounds to put the home team up 55-42 with 3:41 remaining.
  • Over the next two minutes, the Yellowjackets managed to whittle that advantage down to four, closing to 57-53 on a basket by McEachern.
  • Moesch temporarily made it a 7-point game with his second 3-pointer of the night, but Sock and McEachern connected on back-to-back triples to wipe out all but one point of Hobart's lead with just over a minute to go.
  • After Moesch scored on a driving layup, Rochester had its only shot in the second half at tying the contest. Jagodzinski was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 20.3 seconds left. He missed the first, but made the next two free throws to again make it a 1-point game.
  • The Yellowjackets put Moesch on the line, where he made both of his shots to stretch the lead to 64-61 and then Carter Meshanic stole Rochester's inbound pass and was fouled. Icing the win with two more free throws.
