Statesmen fall to Spartans in opener

YORK, Pa.—The Hobart basketball team suffered a 65-59 loss at York College of Pennsylvania in its season opener this afternoon. The Statesmen were led by first-year Monty Nedd's 15 points, five steals and three assists.
 
HOBART HIGHLIGHTS
  • Nedd was 4-of-7 from the floor with a 3-pointer and added six points at the free throw line.
  • Sophomore Dorian Paki added 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds.
  • Senior Carter Meshanic was two points away from a double-double, logging eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
 
SPARTAN EFFORTS
  • York was led by Jayden Rowe's 16 points, including a game-high three 3-pointers. He also pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
  • Kai Cipalla contributed 13 points.
 
KEY STATS
  • York shot 51.1% from the floor, including 60% in the second half.
  • Hobart shot 37.3 from the floor.
  • The Spartans made nine 3-pointers compared to just four for the Statesmen.
  • Hobart comminated on the glass, outrebounding York 44-27.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Statesmen used an 11-3 run early in the game to take a 15-10 lead.
  • Sophomore Alex Moesch led the surge with five of his seven points in the game.
  • The Spartans countered with a 14-1 run that put them in the lead for good.
  • Hobart scored the final seven points of the first half to trim its deficit to 30-26 at the break.
  • York led by as many as 15 in the second half, but a 12-1 run by the Statesmen cut the home team's advantage to just four with four minutes to go.
  • The Spartans secured the victory with the next six points, including a clutch 3-pointer by Tate Landis (8 pts).
 
HOME OPENER
  • Hobart will return to the friendly confines of Bristol Gym to begin the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 13, welcoming St. John Fisher for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
