Herons open conference play with Union, Vassar this weekend

The William Smith basketball team concludes its four-game homestand this weekend as it kicks off conference play, hosting Union on Friday, Dec. 6, and Vassar on Saturday, Dec. 7, in Bristol Gymnasium. The Herons will face the Garnet Chargers on Friday at 5:30 p.m., followed by a Saturday matchup against the Brewers at 2 p.m.

Fans who can't make it to Geneva can follow the game with HWS All-Access Video and Live Stats. The game will also be broadcast on WHWS-FM (105.7 in Geneva).

ABOUT THE HERONS: (0-4, 0-0)
  • Sophomore Amelia McCully is third in the Liberty League in scoring, averaging 16.8 points per game. She is followed by first-year Jojo Sulmasy who ranks in the top 25 in the conference with 8.8 ppg.
  • Sulmasy leads the team and ranks 11th in the conference in rebounding, averaging 6.5 boards per game. Senior Molly Walsh is second on the team, averaging 4.5 rpg.
  • On the defensive end, McCully and first-year Anne Keneally lead William Smith in steals, averaging 1.5 per game. Walsh and sophomores Grace O'Connor and Giana Lobozzo follow with 1.0 per game each.
  • McCulley leads the Liberty League in blocked shots, averaging 2.3 blocks per game.
ABOUT THE GARNET CHARGERS: (3-3, 0-0)
  • Jelena Perovic leads the Garnet Chargers' offense, averaging 11.7 ppg. She is followed by Grace Ceseretti with 11.0 ppg.
  • Olivia Cunningham leads the team in rebounding, averaging 5.8 boards per game, while Ceseretti and Jenna Forman average 5.0 per game each.  
  • Ceseretti and Emma Riley share the team-lead in steals, averaging 1.5 per game each.  
ABOUT THE BREWERS: (3-1, 0-0)
  • Vassar will play at Ithaca on Friday before heading to Geneva.
  • The Brewers are receiving votes in this week's D3hoops.com poll.
  • Sierra McDermed leads the Liberty League in scoring, averaging 18.5 ppg. Julia Harvey follows close behind, averaging 17.8 ppg.
  • Tova Gelb grabs a team-high 9.8 rebounds per game, while McDermed follows with 8.0 rpg.
  • Gelb also leads the team in steals, averaging 2.5 per game. She is followed by McDermed who forces 1.5 per game.
SERIES SNAPSHOT:
  • This will be the 68th matchup between William Smith and Union. The Herons lead the series 39-28, including a 20-12 edge in Geneva.
  • Last time they met, the Garnet Chargers defeated the Herons 60-55 on Feb. 17, 2024, in Geneva. McCulley recorded 10 points, five rebounds, three steals and one block in the loss.
  • This will be the 53rd matchup between William Smith and Vassar. The Herons lead the series 37-15, including a 21-4 record against the Brewers in Geneva.
  • Last time they met, the Herons defeated the No. 20 Brewers 49-48 on Feb. 16, 2024, in Bristol Gymnasium. William Smith snapped a seven-game losing streak to Vassar and ended the Brewers' 21-game win streak to hand them their only conference loss of the season. It was the Herons' first win over a nationally ranked opponent since 2008.
