GENEVA, N.Y.—Playing its first match of the spring season, the William Smith tennis team ended up on the short end of an 8-1 match against the Smith Pioneers.
Smith's No. 1 doubles team posted an 8-2 victory, but the Herons put up a determined fight at No. 2 and No. 3. Both matches went to a tiebreaker with the Pioneers (3-0) prevailing 7-2 in the tiebreak at No. 2 and 7-5 at No. 3.
In singles, the visitors secured the match victory with straight set wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5. At third singles,
Natalie Haythorn won the first set 6-0, but Arame Jung took the second 6-3. Jung captured the match in the super tie breaker 10-7.
Marin Montagne earned the lone point for William Smith. She dispatched Dayana Caluna 6-3, 6-2.
The Herons (0-2) will play the second of three straight home matches to open the spring on Sunday, March 3 when they welcome Oneonta for a noon match.
