McGinty nets 200th point, #2 Herons ground #4 Sea Gulls 10-7

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla.—The second-ranked William Smith lacrosse team used a 4-1 run in the fourth quarter to knock off fourth-ranked Salisbury 10-7 in a non-conference contest at Publix Sports Park this evening. Senior attacker Allie McGinty became the 11th player in program history to record 200 career points in the victory.  
 
The Herons (5-0) were led by senior Maddie Montgomery, who had three goals and an assist in the game. Sophomore Hannah Evans also recorded a hat trick. McGinty had a game-high two assists. Sophomore Natalie Daniels scored twice and had four draw controls. First-year Janey Sypeck had a game-high five caused turnovers and had three ground balls. Sypeck's five caused turnovers were the most by a Heron since Liza Diffley had six against Clarkson last year. Junior Maura Smeader played all 60 minutes in goal and made a season-high 12 saves.
 
The Sea Gulls (6-2) were led by Grace Doyle's two goals and Camryn Pepper's two assists. Doyle also had a team-high three draw controls while Natalie Held recorded three caused turnovers, four ground balls and two draw controls. Kaitlyn Hunsinger played just over 58 minutes in goal. She made five saves.

  • With three points today, McGinty extended her points streak to 48 straight games.
  • Montgomery also added to her impressive scoring streak. She has goals in 42 straight games and has 14 consecutive multi-goal games.

  • Salisbury finished the game with a 27-18 advantage in shots and a 15-10 edge in ground balls.
  • William Smith had an 11-10 edge in the draw circle.

GAME SUMMARY
  • The first half was a defensive battle with the Herons emerging with a 4-3 lead after 30 minutes.
  • The Sea Gulls opened the scoring five minutes into the game. Leah Vilov bounced home a pass from Evan Scannell.
  • Thirty seconds later, Scannell nearly gave Salisbury a two-goal lead, but Smeader made a point-blank save on the right-handed shot.
  • Daniels tied the game with 6-11 left in the opening frame. Her 13th goal of the season was unassisted.
  • Miranda Mears bounced home a pass from Pepper with 28 seconds left in the first quarter. The goal gave Salisbury a 2-1 lead after 15 minutes.
  • Montgomery scored back-to-back goals to open the second quarter. The tallies were her team-leading 19th and 20th goals of the year and were unassisted. The second goal was a woman-up strike.
  • With 2:09 left in the first half, Grace Doyle notched a goal off a pass from Pepper.
  • William Smith regained the lead on Daniels' 14th goal of the season. She ripped an underhanded free position attempt past Hunsinger.
  • Evans opened the second half with her 10th goal of the season. McGinty was awarded an assist on the goal.
  • Four minutes later, McGinty added a goal of her own She bounced a free position shot past Hunsinger for her third goal of the year.
  • The Sea Gulls scored the next three goals to tie the game 6-6 after 45 minutes. Caroline Knight and Julianna Ott scored free position goals. Doyle ended the run with her second goal of the game with 4:02 left in the frame. Her tally was assisted by Many Hanzsche.
  • Evans opened the fourth quarter with her second goal of the game. Her 11th goal of the season was assisted by McGinty. The helper was McGinty's 200th career point.
  • Montgomery scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal with 11:27 remaining in regulation on a free position attempt.
  • Two minutes later she set up Evans' hat trick goal.
  • Alexandra Parker tacked on a free position goal for Salisbury with 3:14 remaining in the game.
  • Junior Katherine Murray rounded out the scoring. Her second goal of the season just beat the shot clock. It was an unassisted goal.
 
UP NEXT
William Smith will be back in action this weekend, March 22-23, when it returns to New York to begin Liberty League play. The Herons will host Union on Friday at 4 p.m. and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday at 2 p.m.
