Montgomery nets scoring record, #3 Herons slip past #7 Spartans in OT

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith sophomore attacker Natalie Daniels scored just over two minutes into the overtime session to lift the third-ranked Herons to an 11-10 win over seventh-ranked York College of Pennsylvania in a non-conference thriller inside the Poole Family Dome this afternoon. Senior Midfielder Maddie Montgomery had five goals in the victory as she became William Smith's all-time leading scorer with 211 goals.
 
Montgomery's third goal of the game was the 209th of her career. It broke William Smith's career record of 208 held by Heron Hall of Honor inductee Amy Hoover '95.  Hoover had 208 goals from 1992-1995.
 
Daniels had four goals including the game-winning tally. Senior Molly Davis added two goals. Senior Allie McGinty led the Herons with two assists in the game. Daniels added a game-high eight draw controls and had two ground balls and a caused turnover. Junior Nicole Pio and first-year Janey Sypeck shared game-high honors with two caused turnovers each. Junior goalie Maura Smeader played all 62:07 in goal and made eight saves. She had a game-high six ground balls.
 
Gianna Huet and Zoe Kluegel had hat tricks for the Spartans (0-2). Huet added an assist to finish with a team-high four points. Madison Kurland added a goal and an assist in the loss. Bella Garbo went the distance in goal. She made 10 saves and had a team-high three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Sydney Mentzer won five draw controls.

  • York scored the game's next two goals to take a 4-3 lead with 5:45 left in the frame. Mentzer scored on a free position shot and then Huet notched her second goal of the game just under a minute later.
  • The Herons answered back with two goals of their own. Montgomery ripped home a feed from Allie McGinty to break the scoring record and then Molly Davis scored a woman-up goal with 1:50 left in the quarter. Davis' second goal of the season was assisted by McGinty.
  • Kluegel rounded out the first quarter with her fifth goal of the season.
  • The Herons scored two of the three goals in the second quarter. After 10 minutes of spectacular defensive play at both ends of the field, Montgomery buried her fourth goal. One minute later, Davis collected a rebound in front of the crease and stuffed a shot across the goal line. Both goals were unassisted tallies.
  • Madison Kurland made it a one-goal game at the halftime break with her third goal of the season. Huet was awarded an assist on the play.
  • York tied the game 7-7 Just under two minutes into the second half. Mentzer scored on a free position shot that just beat the shot clock.
  • The Herons regained the lead on a Daniels' free position attempt with 10 minutes left in the half.
  • The Spartans again beat the buzzer. Huet notched her fourth goal of the season with 10 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
  • York extended the run to two goals when Jen Campbell scored her first goal of the season on a feed from Kurland. It gave the Spartans a 9-8 lead.
  • Montgomery and Daniels scored in the middle portion of the fourth quarter to give William Smith a 10-9 lead with 4:47 remaining in regulation. Both goals were unassisted strikes.
  • Kluegel made it 10-10 with 4;20 left in regulation.
  • York had the first possession in the overtime session. Maura Smeader made a big save on Campbell and made sure there was no rebound opportunity.
  • Daniels, who won the game on a tight angle shot, landed in the crease. After a referee discussion, it was ruled she was pushed into the crease and the goal stood.

William Smith will be back in action on Wednesday, March 6, when it welcomes Geneseo to Geneva. The opening draw is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
