#5 Syracuse holds off Hobart 13-7

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart lacrosse team hung with fifth-ranked Syracuse in the first half, but the Orange scored four straight goals to start the second half on the way to a 13-7 win in the 38th edition of the Kraus-Simmons Trophy Game.
 
Syracuse native Anthony Dattellas had a game-high four points for the Statesmen, scoring three goals and adding an assist. First-year Chris Patterson posted his third straight game with at least three goals, notching a hat trick against SU. Junior defenseman Nolan Firth grabbed a team-high six ground balls. Sophomore goalie Elhanan Wilson made 12 saves.
 
For the Orange, four players finished the day with three points, including a hat trick by Christian Mule and three assists from Joey Spallina. Faceoff specialists Mason Kohn (7-13) and John Mullen (6-11) gave Syracuse the edge at the X. Goalie Will Mark made 10 saves.
 
KEY STATS
  • Syracuse had the advantage in shots (45-32), ground balls (42-29) and committed fewer turnovers (15-23).
  • Both teams came into the game winning more than 60% of their faceoffs, but it was the Orange that had the slight edge at the end of the day, 13-11.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hobart opened the scoring 33 seconds into the game when Patterson fired a shot past Mark. The Statesmen seemed to debut a new goal song as the fire alarm in the press box went off right after the tally.
  • Mule tied the game a minute later, but Dattellas put the Statesmen back in front 37 seconds after that.
  • SU grabbed its first lead with back-to-back goals by Finn Thomson and Trey Deere.
  • Patterson forged the third tie with just under two minutes left in the opening quarter, but Michael Leo scored 27 seconds after Patterson to return the visitors to the lead.
  • Patterson appeared to score again with 3.7 seconds left, but the officials waived it off.
  • Syracuse added to its lead with the first strike of the second quarter, but Hobart got consecutive goals from Dattellas to knot the game at 5.
  • Sam English finished a feed from Spallina with 20 seconds to go in the half to send the Orange into halftime with a 6-5 lead.
  • After warming up in the locker room, Syracuse stayed hot in the third quarter, scoring four straight to build a 10-5 lead.
  • Hobart halted the run when Will Delano scored an extra-man goal off a Dattellas assist. It was his team-leading sixth man-up goal.
  • Patterson completed his hat trick before the end of the third quarter to trim the SU lead to 10-7.
  • The Orange (9-2) scored all three of the fourth quarter goals to retain the Kraus-Simmons Trophy.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Dattellas moved up to 14th place on Hobart's Division I era points list with 116. He's two points behind No. 13 Chris Pedersen '12.
  • Dattellas' three goals moved him up to 13th place on that career list with 75.
  • His assist gave him 41 for his career and sole possession of 14th place.
  • Dattellas extended his point streak to 19 games and stretched his goal streak to nine games.
 
 UP NEXT
  • Hobart (3-5) returns to action at noon, Saturday March 30 when the Statesmen begin Atlantic 10 play at home against UMass (4-4).
