GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart baseball team split a Liberty League doubleheader with the University of Rochester at McDonough Park this afternoon. The Statesmen won Game 1 5-4 while the Yellowjackets rebounded to take Game 2 6-2.
On the mound, junior
Griffin Snyder gave Hobart a quality start in the opener, allowing just four hits, one earned run with two strikeouts and no walks. First-year
Trevor Kimball threw the final three innings, striking out three while allowing just one earned run.
At the plate, sophomore
Nate Garrett was 3-for-7 for the day. First-year
Sean Garvin was 3-for-8 with two RBIs.
For Rochester, Sammy Besztery went 4-for-8 and Colby Cruser was 3-for-6. Game 2 starter Dillon Bevan gave the Yellowjackets 4 1-3 innings, striking out four while yielding just one unearned run. Cruser finished the fifth for UR to get the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME 1
- Rochester built a 3-1 lead after two innings.
- In the fifth inning, Hobart loaded the bases with one out. Garvin delivered a single up the middle to score two and tie the game.
- Senior Ty Gallagher was hit by a pitch to reload the bases and sophomore Will Jones was also plunked to force in the go-ahead run.
- Alec Ellison's RBI double down the right field line with two outs in the top of the eight tied the game at 4-4.
- In the bottom half of the inning, junior Nate Johnson reached on an error to lead off and moved to second on Connor Schmiedlin's sacrifice bunt. First-year Gavin Brignall delivered a two-out single for the game-winning RBI.
- Kimball pitched around a two-out single to nail down the win, his third of the season.
PLAYER'S PERSPECTIVE
HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME 2
- Dylan Stezzi was 2-for-4 and scored half of his team's six runs. Dan Tirabassi also sent 2-for-4 for Rochester.
- Stezzi scored the game's first run on a sacrifice fly by Tirabassi in the second inning. Matt Rieth followed with a double to plate Besztery for a 2-0 lead.
- Hobart took advantage of a UR error in the fourth to get one run back, but the Yellowjackets scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 4-1.
- The Statesmen trailed 6-1 entering the bottom of the eighth.
- Garrett singled home Connor O'Neil to make it 6-2, but Hobart would get no closer.
